The most notable advancement in card usage in Europe was the use of smart chips in mobile phones.
In the 1990's, major credit card companies, such as VISA, agreed to work together to develop smart card specifications in credit and debit payment cards. Their work has found much greater success in countries other than the United States. National payment associations assist with the credit card companies in integrating detailed plans and implementation procedures for financial transactions with card payments.
Areas where smart cards are developing are mass transit, driver's licenses, patient card needs and passports.
