, the Bund in Shanghai is one that should always be at the top every travelers list. Considered by many as one of the most beautiful areas of the city, it can be considered the Champs-Elysees of China. The walkway is steeped in history and this stroll down the bank of Huangpu River will literally take through the different phases in the development of Shanghai.
Due to its location, Shanghai was always the preferred place of business for numerous colonists and businessmen from all over the world. Many historical buildings that once housed European banks, business and diplomatic missions can be seen all along the Bund, such as the HSBC building, the Customs Building and the Bund Museum. This area, which is located along Zhongshan Road, was first a British settlement. Later, the British and American settlements were amalgamated to form the International Settlement which eventually led to the Bund becoming one of the largest financial hubs in the world.
With an illustrious past and a thriving present as the commercial heart of Shanghai, the Bund may seem on the surface to be a bit drab and boring. Not so, there are plenty of activities that tourists can engage in; such as taking a cruise on the Huangpu River which enables you to observe the breathtaking cityscape from a different angle.
Being a busy commercial area it is no surprise that the Bund offers some of the best shopping and entertainment in the city. The area is home to some of the finest high-end boutiques and malls as well as chic cafes and restaurants.
