Taylormade R9 SuperMax Irons And Taylormade R9 Max Irons Review
Back when the lineup was first announced I called the Supermax iron mid sized. Now that I've received the Supermax clubs from TM for testing I realize that I was visually fooled into calling them mid sized, and that's a good thing. One of the biggest complaints about higher handicapper or so called game improvement irons is usually their bulky size and enlarged dimensions and offset creating an awkward balance and appearance at address. The shovel appearance of game improvement irons is often enhanced by a huge goose neck or in simple terms too much offset. The new R9 Supermax iron is NOT like this at all.
The R9 Supermax Iron features long and mid irons with a 2 piece undercut cavity design and shorter irons in a 1 piece design with no undercut. The long irons feature a 17-4 body and a custom 455 face while the 8 to wedges are all 17-4 SS. The irons do have some offset especially in the longer irons which becomes progressively less as the irons get shorter. The lofts are ultra strong with a 23* 5 iron again showing a big focus on distance. This is not a tradition undercut in that it has an open pocket cavity. It is in fact a hollow cavity and face filled with foam and a plug behind the sweet area of the face. These features are used to create vibration dampening and soften the feel at impact. The back cavity is pretty good looking and does feature TM's inverted cone technology.
Features:
1. Traditional look and shape with reduced offset. Clean, simple lines appeal to more traditional tastes
2. Two-piece hollow construction and Inverted Cone Technology (ICT) in the 4- through 7-irons. The large, thin faces deliver a significant increase in COR to promote faster ball speed as well as increased MOI for maximum forgiveness
3. One-piece undercut cavity with ICT in 8-iron through SW. Expands the sweet spot and lowers CG for high, yet controllable trajectories in the shorter irons
TheR9features a dual head design made for both performance and control. the 3-5 irons feature a high repulsion face with hollow cavity structure for increased distance. The 6-Wedge feature a more compact undercut pocket cavity with a focus on feel, control and accuracy. TheR9features variable face thickness. Starting with 2.0mm thick face in the long irons to 2.3mm in the mid irons and 2.5mm in the short irons for enhanced feel.
Taylormade R9 Max Irons
Taylormadeutilizes its inverted cone technology to expand the sweet area reducing overall loss on off center hits. The multifunctional sole is versatile and made to excel in any lie. The newR9 Maxhas strong lofts with a 25* 5 iron and a wider sole and more offset than the standard JapanR9 iron. Those who wantR9Technology in an ultra forgiving and distance performing package should opt for the super forgivingR9 Max iron.
When comparing the two irons side by side, the Max is not much bigger but you can clearly see the slightly expanded dimensions. So overall the R9 Max is not in any ways huge though the top line is on the thick side. The wider sole leads do a deeper cavity and more weight lower in the head for a high trajectory launch, coupled with the strong lofts we are talking about a distance iron here. Interestingly, while both share the inverted cone technology, what players usually perceive as a sign of extra forgiveness, the pocket cavity is actually on the R9 iron and not the R9 Max.
I could hit a high soft draw with the R9 Max as advertised but I still need to hone my game to properly play the R9. Size wise the R9 will satisfy a lot of players, it is relatively small, almost as small as a compact player's cavity like the Epon AF-302 whose dimensions match up favorably. The difference being the R9 is longer heel to toe than the Epon and has a slightly thicker tapered top line. I believe it will suit the player with a 10 handicap or above but lower handicappers may not want the pocket cavity and longer heel to toe. This may in fact be the case as it appears the R9 iron may not have sold well as expected. Other Japan only models like the Burner Forged have been flying off the shelves and the new Burner TP which is already sold out jus by PRE- ORDER!
