Tax Return Mix Ups

Share: Even if you get your taxes in on time, there are still many common errors that are made on tax forms that can lead to IRS involvement
. The following are common mistakes that people need to avoid in order to have their tax returns completed properly and in a timely fashion:
The most important part of filling out taxes is making sure you use the correct social security numbers. This is the main tool in showing the government your true identity, and writing the wrong social security number will not only make your entire tax form invalid, but it can also be considered a federal offense if the IRS finds that the mistake was intentional.
Claiming you status, or number of dependents, is often a gray area for tax payers. Choosing either "single" or "married" is only the beginning of the process. Marital status is determined as of December 31st, and anything prior to that date is considered irrelevant by the IRS. This will play a large role if you qualify as "head of household" or for child tax credit.
When using computer programs like Turbo Tax or Quickbooks, be sure to have all the paperwork completed in a uniform file form. If you use PDF files for one form, be sure to use it for all of your paperwork. Computers will often take on a mind of their own, so keep a close eye on auto-formatting and other computer actions that may automatically alter your files.
Perhaps the silliest mistake is when people forget to sign and date the returns. Be mindful of every line that asks for a date and a signature. For joint returns, each spouse must autograph the returns. Kids over the age of 18 that are still considered dependents will often be required to sign the forms, too.
Completing tax returns does not have to cause anxiety. Whether you own a deli in New York, a surf shop in California, or a car-parts store in Michigan, tax preparation does not have to be a demanding task. Be mindful of all the small nuances on your tax returns and the May flowers will be here before you know it
