Tamerica Tashin Tw3100 Wire Binding Machine Review

Tamerica's TW3100 is a three to one pitch binding system that binds documents in the double loop wire style

. The machine comes with a wire hanger and a wire closing device included. Here are a few of what we consider to be the TW3100's strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

1.) We've always found that disengageable dies are one of the better features to have in a binding system, and the TW3100 has forty of them. What this means is that you will be able to punch and bind documents that are up to 14" in length (also known as legal size). This feature alone means that the TW3100 is one of the most affordable double loop binding systems on the market.

2.) The TW3100 features two separate handles, one that operates the punching mechanism and one for the wire closer. This is a great idea, a lot of similar binding systems have just one handle that operates both the punching mechanism and the wire closer. A one handle design can often leads to stress on the wire closer which then leads to a loss of accuracy. The TW3100's two handle design ensures that you won't have to worry about this.

3.) In addition to the forty disengageable dies, the TW3100 also features a gauge that allows you to control the depth of your punch. This great feature allows the user to ensure functionality of documents both thick and thin. On larger documents, for instance, you will want the punched holes to be a little further from the sheet edge so the pages will turn easily and they are less likely to be accidentally torn from the book during normal usage.

4.) The TW3100 features all metal construction including all of the major components. It is clearly built to stand up to years of use. Tamerica must agree, they provide a two year warranty on this machine whereas the industry standard seems to be one year.

Weaknesses:

1.) The wire closer on the TW3100's front end appears to be rugged enough to withstand medium duty usage without a problem. We did find, however that having to open a compartment in order to use the closer made the whole process a little less convenient that we would like to see. All it does is add an extra step to the process. Not a big deal for small projects, however, for larger volumes this may get a little tedious.

2.) The TW3100 is a nice machine, but it is still a manual binding system after all is said and done. Users who will need to process a large number of books on a regular basis would probably be advised to find a machine that contains an electric punching mechanism.

3.) This is a machine that is designed to bind books with a three to one pitch, which limits the book size somewhat. If you are going to be producing larger books on a regular basis, you may want to find a machine that will punch both two to one and three to one pitch holes.
