Star Wars: Imperial Academy Review
Star Wars: Imperial Academy
Star Wars: Imperial Academy
Information
Star Wars Imperial Academy is a first person shooter available on the Apple app store. There are a maximum 4 players online and the game supports both leaderboards and private matches.
Summary
In summary the first to ten kills in each match wins the game. There are nine maps (at print), each with their own distinct Star Wars location. There is levelling up capabilities on each game and there are awards for in game achievements. You can play against Bots or human opponents and the game from the makers of the brilliant app Eliminate.
Maps
The Bridge map is set within a Star Destroyer and is based on two levels. Outside of the windows you can see other Destroyers and the Death Star is visible also.
The Rebel Base in the Empires Strikes Back provides the setting for another of the maps. The Hoth map has a snow speeder located in the middle of the map and has a number of boxes that surround it. There are also some elevated levels on the outer perimeter.
Set on the CR90 corvette ship from Episode IV the Tantive IV map is set on two different levels. There is a fascinating mix of claustrophobic corridor based fighting, and open melee areas. There is an upper level that enables you to get away from any heated action on the lower levels. Arguably one of the better levels.
Poor old Han Solo is the centrepiece to the Cloud City Chamber map. Still frozen in Carbonite he stands dead centre around which is the circular level that is found in the Empire Strikes Back . There are two protected platforms that provide safe shooting positions.
The Millennium Falcon makes an appearance in the Cloud City Tower map. Falling Skywalker style on this map sees you land upon Hans ship where you can continue the battle if you wish. Impressive, most impressive. One of the better maps.
Mostly indoor battles take place on Tatooine making it no place for droids! Outside of the buildings is a Land Speeder located on the sandy plain .
The Library is probably the weakest map on the game. Shaped like an X with a lot of books in the middle pretty much sums up the main aspects.
The Hangar map appears to be set on the Death Star with a Tie-Fighter situated on the hangar entrance with a never ending space view beyond this. A largish map set on several levels.
On the Jabba map you can probably guess what three items the makers have included from the film. Han Solo in carbonite check, Rancor beast check, and Jabbas trap door. Despite the nice subtle movie references, the map is certainly not as playable as some of the others.
Praise and Grumble
Praise
The game is from the makers of the brilliant Eliminate, ngmoco.
Its free! Given the amount of games available on iTunes Store where you have to purchase them and which turn out to be sub standard, a free game should always be considered a massive positive. I cannot emphasise how, despite some notable flaws, you should get this game considering a) it is free and b) it is overall a generally satisfying game to play especially for Star Wars (and Eliminate) fans. Truly it is greater than a lot of apps you have to pay for.
The makers still appear to be adding new elements to the game, three new maps have been added within the last month since launch. For a free app they really are going above and beyond compared to the norm.
The app is an extremely playable first person Star Wars shooter with familiar locations from the original trilogy, that does no disservice to the franchise.
The maps are varied enough in their content to provide different types of combat. There are indoor and outdoor sections as well as claustrophobic corridors, open space, and enclosed sniping nests
Given there are four players on each map at any one time, the maps are the correct size.
Theres an option for people who are left handed to change the controls to suit them.
There are lots of awards to collect from in game achievements.
There are leaderboards for Galactic Skill Rating, Academy Matches Won and Player Kills.
One welcome feature is that the game does not necessarily have to be played multiplayer. You can instead practice offline against Bots on the same maps.
The graphics do not do any disservice to the general gameplay.
Grumble
I had problems downloading new content, with the downloading frequently crashing and taking ages to complete when it did decide to work.
The size of an iPod screen means that looking around and shooting frequently merge into one unholy mess.
Star Wars Themes ringing out would have been great.
The sound effects are woeful. Stormtroopers crying out in agony really?
It would have been nice to have more players in game and bigger maps.
More game modes would enhance the gameplay no end, like Capture the Flag, Heroes or Team Deathmatch.
