Small Business SEO Tips - Link Placement
When it comes to SEO for your business website you will have noticed that the work
that is being carried out to your website is usually split into two parts. First we have the on page optimisation where your site would be checked over to make sure it is coded correctly and the pages work and that the text on the page is relevant and so on. Secondly you have the off page work. This is where the aim is to get other websites to point to yours by linking to you. On a basic level the more links that you have pointing to your site the more authority your domain gets.
However it is not as simple as getting thousands of links to your small business website. The trust level of the domain linking to you is important, and which pages you are being linked from is also important. Did you know though that where the link is placed on a web page is also important and will affect how much authority is passed on?
There are a few places you can place a link to someones website from your own page. The most common would be in the sidebar of the page. This is often where you will find the blogroll, or links of a website and is the most common place to link out to websites you are friends with or that you recommend to your users. Links contained within the sidebar are a great place to have a link and pass on a decent amount of link authority to the domain being linked to.
Another common place you will find people placing inks is in the footer of a web page. A lot of sites will place slightly less relevant links in the footer, or links that are part of a link exchange program. Sadly a lot of
small business seo websites think they need to have reciprocal URLs to get people linking to their website and they end up with a messy footer on the bottom of the page with link exchanges they have made or directories they signed up to, usually with half the sites now broken an unchecked. Search engines know that the footer is a place out of sight and out of mind for most website owners and readers therefore links in the footer pass very little authority to the domain being linked to. That is not to say if you if have a well maintained website with very few outgoing links that the link authority is worthless, but the links would be best coming from the sidebar or the content itself.
The other main place you will find links being placed on websites is within articles and blog posts themselves. These are links within the actual text of the document rather than the resource box or on the side of the page. Search engines view these links with the most authority. This is because the links are in context. Not only to the context of the page but also within the context of sentences and words they are surrounded by. If a site is being linked to within a body of text it must be very relevant to the topic being discussed. It is also harder to spam websites with in article links as you need the owner to approve the articles and links which is harder on a large scale than getting them to simply place a link at the bottom or side of a page.
These are a couple of the main places you will find links and should help you next time you want to get a link back from a website.
