Skid Steers Can Move Your Business In The Right Direction

Skid Steers Can Move Your Business In The Right Direction

You might have seen a small vehicle used at a work site to move earth

, supplies or even blow snow. It might have been by the side of the road, leveling piles of gravel or mowing brush. In a warehouse, the vehicle might have a pallet lifter attached to its front. Skid steers are the name of these versatile vehicles. My dad always called them 'Bobcats' as a generic name after the widest known brands. He loved how they are easy to get into a yard, move around quickly and use less fuel than a big vehicle, like a backhoe. The size of a skid steer makes it easy to transport them to job sites on a trailer hauled by a pickup truck. The vehicles can have different attachments added to increase the range of activities they can preform.

A skid steer loader is a small rigid machine that is engine-powered with lift arms that attach a wide variety of labor saving devices. Its different from a front loader because the lift arms are attached behind the driver's shoulders. When seated in one can almost feel like the lift arms are an extension of your body. Skid loaders have developed fully enclosed cabs to protect the operator from harm. Skid steers were invented in 1953 for a farmer. They became widely developed in the 1960's. A few of the name brands of skid steers are 'Bobcat', 'New Holland', 'Caterpillar', 'Case', 'John Deere', 'Komatsu' and 'JCB'.

When the skid steers have tracks instead of wheels, they are called multi-terrain vehicles. Multi-terrain loaders are best on soft surfaces or in areas where more traction is needed, like mud or snow. They are powered by a drive system that does not include a transmission. Instead the vehicle uses pumps and hydraulic motors to provide power to the wheels or tracks.

When considering the purchase of one of these versatile machines, their value is measured in the amount of hours they have been run. If a machine is more than 500 hours 'old', meaning it has put in 500 hours of work, its value drops to half of the value it has when it is new. While the resale value drops, it remains relatively steady. A used skid steer is a great buy because it holds its value well after that 500 hours mark. Like any used vehicle purchase, it is a good idea to get a professional mechanic's opinion before purchasing a used skid steer.
