The purpose of IUID marking
IUID marking is the marking of an item's unique identification. As per MIL STD 130, the Department of Defense requires that many items be assigned an IUID marking in order to mark, identify, and track the military property effectively. MIL STD 130 consolidates the different specifications and standards which are involved in the creation of the IUID marking. In any conflicts between MIL STD 130 and other documentation, regarding IUID marking or any other stated guidelines, MIL STD 130 takes complete precedence. Some items, such as cell phones and automobiles, are considered non IUID items as they have their own identification numbers already assigned to them by their respective manufacturers.
How should the IUID be marked?
The IUID marking is to be either directly on the item or on a stiff metal band attached to the item. If at all possible, the IUID should be visible whenever the item is used in normal operation, and the marking must be able to remain legible after any necessary cleaning and rebuilding, for the life of the item. Unless deemed impossible due to lack of space or other reasons, the IUID must be a MRI (machine readable identification). If there is not room for the complete IUID, the more essential data should be shown instead. There are many different industry specific guidelines, and several guidelines regarding font and text size are also included in MIL STD 130.
What all should the IUID contain?
Depending on the construct used for the IUID, there may be different pieces of data required to be included. Both constructs require the serial number as well as the EID of the activity assigning the serial number. Certain specifications also apply regarding the marking of the item's PIN number, and procedures to be followed should the PIN number be changed.
Should the MRI include anything other than the IUID?
In addition to the IUID, the MRI must be updated with any repair or maintenance performed, as well as any data regarding dates of repair of the item, facilities at which the repair took place, updates or extensions to any warranties, and other information as well. The arrangement of the numbers in the MRI is specific so as to allow the IUID marking to be read by machines. Other guidelines involve the quality of the marking as well as the amount of data required to be contained in the MRI.
