Set Up A Non-profit With Quick Wins

Share: Often those who start non profits do so with a keen disinterest in the for profit
business world and the focus on revenues and bottom lines this world generally entails. Because of this mindset, non profit directors often are not well prepared for the serious financial needs of their organizations. And while, in an ideal world, funding for a service that fills a demonstrated social need may simply fall into place, in the real world, funding is fought for just as heartily as a business seeks to hit its sales numbers. Furthermore, the initial funding a non profit needs to launch may be hard to come by without any track record proving the ability of the organization to do any real good with its money.
"Quick Wins" Approach
Your non profit organization must demonstrate its ability to serve its stated purpose before significant grant and donor funding are brought in. One way to achieve this is to create a prototype project which uses the methods which you plan for the organization and to launch this project with your own funds, or with limited funds provided by a select group of donors.
Conditions
A few important conditions apply for this type of non profit "demo". First of all, it must be possible to show impact on the social problem even in a short-time span. If you are attempting to reduce birth rates in a population, it may take years to show the impact among the community you work with opposed to national or regional averages. In this case you may not be able to demonstrate your effect on birth rates, but you may be able to demonstrate the number of community members attending your workshops and their change in mindset through surveys. Existing research may help fill in the blanks to show what the expected effect on birth rates will be.
Secondly, you must be able to document both the methods used and the results clearly and convincingly. Use a third party to help with this documentation or to audit your results if there will be any question as to their truthfulness when presented later on.
Thirdly, within the plan that you create, it must be implied that greater scale make your organization even more efficient in serving the public need. This means that doubling or tripling the impact that you achieved in this pilot program should require less than double or triple the funding. If this isn't the case, then your organization is not well designed yet and you won't be able to make a case for it easily. You must have a clear explanation within your proposals and plan for how economies of scale will be achieved as you grow and spread your fixed costs over wider and greater results.
