Selecting The Right Data Center For Your Business

Selecting The Right Data Center For Your Business

Selecting the right data center colocation facility can be the single most important

location for any business that relies on online business through a website or through telecommunications means. A data center is a specific location that holds computer systems, back up restore systems, telecommunication systems, and security systems. Data centers and colocation facilities are built specifically to support these technology devices which make data centers a desirable location to collocate technology equipment.

Businesses that rely on modern technology depend on their computer systems for all business needs. Most professional computer systems used in offices hold everything from critical data on business plans, financial information, to customer orders and business transactions. A data center must be properly equipped to store and protect all of this vital data information from theft, fire, power, bandwidth and environmental elements.

Selecting a location for your data center facility should be a priority for protecting and increasing productivity. You need to consider the computer equipment and server sizes, a data center can be as simple as a shelf in a cabinet, a small room or as complex as an office floor or building. Typically the larger the system need, the large the data room storage facility. Geographical location is important; decide if you would like the data center close to your office or if this is not a necessity place it in a diverse state and with a trusted vendor and well known facility which has proven experience. Many new datacenters are built in old buildings which can have power issues raising power costs, so make sure your facility has addressed that concern.

Controlled Environment All colocation data centers must be held in a temperature stable environment which is carefully balanced to avoid humidity and moisture, as well as protection from outside elements. Electrical equipment gets extremely hot and can sometimes overheat due to old equipment or improper engineering, so correct engineering, a cool temperature and air ventilation system is optimal for good, continuous performance.

Power and backup generators are an integral part to data center buildings. A power failure could render business information unusable and cost large sums of money in lost sales from downtime. Data centers must have an adequate generator for all of the equipment. Most generators used in large data centers are diesel powered and need to be able to sustain the data centers power usage in the event the main power line is down. In addition, typically surrogate electrical UPS will kick in temporarily to support the transition from the main power line to the generators for the datacenter in case of an emergency.

Security is also a major concern when running a data center for any company. Computer hacking and disabling viruses are a part of today's modern technology, and must be combated with the strictest of security. Data centers do not typically include this service, so check with them to see their security policies; you may want to outsource this to your ISP provider who will have most control over the internet connection. A security and network monitoring system should also be in place to detect suspicious activity and internal data regarding the on goings of all computers and personnel working in the colocation datacenter or system. Tight data center security will make it easier for technicians to identify where an issue may come from and offer a quicker road to solutions and can ward off disgruntled employees from attempting to jeopardize your equipment and business productivity.

Selecting a colocation data center is a business decision and expense that should take time, care, and research. Data centers literally hold the life of the business in their hands. Care and consideration of the data center location is sure to be a positive for business productivity in the long run.
