In the olden days when people all walked barefoot through the snow
, uphill, five miles to school, scholarship lists could be found at local libraries and universities. Students would scour the lists looking for scholarships they qualified for and then determine the requirements which usually included an essay, among other things, and then would send their information in through, gasp, the mail.
The times though, they are a changing. Nowadays, online directories list thousands of scholarships which can be sorted and looked through in a matter of seconds. Since many scholarships are targeted at a certain group of people, finding the ones you qualified for used to take a good deal of time. Now, however, whole lists can now be generated which focus on only those segments for which you qualify.
There are ways to make your search more effective and even safer than blindly filling out scholarship applications all over the internet. First, start early. The best way to ensure that you will find the most scholarships is to be the first person to look for them.
It is suggested that students begin searching for scholarships at either the beginning of their senior year, or close to the end of their junior year in high school. This allows for ample time to fill out the paperwork and fulfill any requirements. Second is to use other people as resources. Classmates and especially older students are valuable resources for information on scholarships.
Other students who are either also trying to find scholarships or have recently received them will know where to look and can glean any secrets they learned during the process. Lastly, watch out for pay sites. A number of "for-charge" directories have popped up that charge a fee to see their lists. Some of these sites fraudulently take the money that students earn for scholarships as their fee.
Scholarships are a great way to finance school. A huge number of them exist and they boil down to free money for education. With a little research and the right directory, finding a scholarship can be a very rewarding experience.
