Saving Money On Your Gas
In fact, I am willing to venture that most of us spend a considerable amount of time in our vehicles (perhaps more than we would like to admit
. That being said, when you are low on cash and trying to think of ways to save money at the gas pump, there are several things that you can do to lessen your burden.
For starters, whenever you are driving, pay attention to how fast you are driving. What does the posted speed limit say? And how fast are you driving in comparison. When we drive beyond the speed limit, we are forcing our vehicles to work harder, which then forces us to use up more gasoline. Even worse than speeding, however is when we are stopped in traffic. The stop and go motion of the traffic often causes us to have to apply our brakes and then speed up. These two combined actions lead to a lot of 'surging' throughout our driving, which causes us to use up quite a bit of gasoline. Ideally, if you can swing it, it is much preferred to make sure that you drive on roadways where there is less traffic or where there are fewer lights. In order to accommodate this, one way to think about it is to avoid driving during the times of the day when you know that the area you live in will be the busiest. So, for those of you who have to get to work in the morning, you may want to find alternate routes or leave a little earlier and/or later depending on your individual circumstance.
If you absolutely cannot avoid the traffic delays, one of the most simple and effective ways to save on gasoline is to give yourself and the other person in front of you enough space. If you think about it, if you find yourself constantly applying your brakes (quite sharply), then there is no doubt that you are following the person in front of you way too closely. A safe following distance is one in which you could fit two to three cars between you and the next person. If you are not following someone else so closely, then when they brake, there will be less of a need for you to brake as well- thus saving your brake pads from unnecessary wear and tear.
Remember, driving is a privilege, not a right. Reduce your speed, calm yourself down while you are the driver and maintain a safe following distance at all times. Just doing these few simply things will not only save you a ton of money in the long run; they will also keep you and other people around you safe. When driving, safety is of the utmost importance above anything else, therefore it only makes sense that those who are safer drivers are those who find themselves at the gas pumps less frequently as well as involved in far fewer accidents overall.
