Save Money With Short Breaks
Many people are choosing to take short breaks next year instead of a long two-week
holiday to save money during the recession without actually having to cut out a holiday altogether.
There are many ways to take short breaks without having to spend more than you can afford. The first, and probably the one which will save you the most money, is to book for an off-peak time. Holiday companies hike up the prices as soon as the school holidays start due to the huge increase in demand, and you should really only consider booking during the school holiday periods if you want to take school-aged children with you.
If you don't, you'll find that resorts are generally more relaxed and quieter during off-peak times, which can be far more enjoyable if you are taking a break as a couple and want some time to be alone and enjoy each others' company without any hustle and bustle.
Also, the real party-animal holiday makers tend to only be out in full force during peak times, so if you're looking to have peace and relaxation, rather than non-stop all-night partying, head for resorts at off-peak times.
An easy way to keep an eye on your budget and make sure you stick to it is to go for all-inclusive short breaks, and then you'll know that the vast majority of your food and drink is already paid for. All-inclusive does have its disadvantages however, such as the fact that because you know you've paid for all your food and drink in one location, you're less likely to venture out and try somewhere different; a new restaurant or bar for example, which is often part of the fun on short breaks.
If you're travelling to an airport, the best and cheapest idea is to get a friend to give you a lift. If this isn't possible or you live too far away and are using the train, avoid getting 'express' trains to airports, such as the Heathrow or Gatwick express, and use normal train services which are much cheaper, although a little slower.
Always pre-book taxis; the ones waiting at ranks at the airport will be extortionate in price in comparison to pre-booked ones.
If you are driving to the airport, it pays to book in advance and check with service providers such as your insurance company or breakdown recovery company to see if they have any tie-in deals with airport parking.
Shop around for absolutely everything, including travel insurance. You'll find that prices online are miniscule in comparison to high street travel agents' prices, with many companies offering single-trip European cover for less than 10 pounds per person. Happy holidaying!
