San Diego Financial Planner, Face To Face Meeting
What a FACE to FACE meeting is essential?
Your money is one of the most important things in your life. To be able to meet with your FP in person is paramount to building a vital relationship. True communication is more than words - it is expressions, tone of voice and body language. Expert linguists and psychologists believe what others think we say relies more on these other factors than what comes out of our mouths. In fact, studies show that words account for only 7 percent of the message, tone of voice accounts for 38 percent of the message, and body language accounts for fully 55 percent of the message!
Non-verbal signals, such as body language in particular, is crucial to any communication. When it comes to your financial future, you don't want to rely on only 7% -38% of what you think a person says. Emails, phone calls, even computer cams can not quite give you the full meaning as sitting in a room together will.
Look for nervous habits - tapping pencils, looking away a lot, wiggling a foot. Are they leaning into the conversation (signal of involvement and interest), or leaning back in their chair (a signal of dominance and importance)? Are their hands folded over their chest (guarded), or open on the desk (willing to compromise, being open to ideas)? Does their smile reach their eyes, or does it stop at their mouths. Is their handshake warm and firm or a wet fish? All of these gestures can signal things to your subconscious that will guide you in making your decision as to whether this person is the one who will be the long term administrator of your money.
That is why a face to face meeting, at least initially, is of the utmost necessity and why your financial planner needs to be from right here in San Diego, not half way across the state or on the other coast.
So, where do you start to look in San Diego? Word of mouth is still one of the best resources. Talk with friends, coworkers, family members and people in organizations to which you belong. Gather a list of three to six names and their contact information.
If you can't rely on word of mouth, check out our resource section at the end of the eBook for nationally recognized groups to which FP's affiliate or license. You can search their databases based on zip code or state and city. Just remember, even though these FP's must be top notch to be listed, you are still going in blind until you shake their hand and look them in the eye. It's harder to be lied to that way.
