The Cleveland CG4 Iron is the newest iron offering from Cleveland as they continue to gradually shift from the TA (Tour Action) naming of their clubs to the new CG line. The CG4 comes in to the line basically as a replacement for the TA6/TA7.
The clubheads of the CG4 Iron have progressive off-set which would be good news to high handicappers. I can comfortably hit the 3 iron better than my old Lynx black cat hybrid. Feedback on poorly struck shots for the CG-4 seem to be dampened but good hits reward the player with that soft butter feel. PW is fun to hit around the green. I would recommend this set to mid to high-handicappers.
Cleveland CG4 irons are made with the popular cavity back design, meaning in theory that it should be relatively easy to get the ball into the air as well as being forgiving clubs. They have more carbon and less density than other irons, In common with other Cleveland clubs, the CG4 line is said to have a lower, deeper center of gravity, providing a better sweet spot, and all of these factors are claimed to improve overall performance. These clubs have attracted positive attention for their performance even before the ball is struck, i.e. at the address. The design of the clubs is said to create less reflection when moving the clubs back and forth while sizing up your shot. I think Cleveland will have a tough sell on their hands with the CG4. Although it feels great, the bulky size and large offset will turn-off the better player as will the Action Lite shafts. Upgraded shafts are available but for a price. The price tag on the CG4 iron is way too high for the average player. These are a premium priced iron that lacks a lot of the technology that competitors game improvement clubs have. They do have a great feel but in my experience this is low on the list of priorities for a lot of mid and high handicappers. The biggest challenge with the CG4 iron is trying to figure out just who it is designed for.
