As the hormone levels change in your body, you may also be at greater risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is the loss of density of the bones. As the problem progresses, you bones can become very brittle and breaks occur more easily. As you age, the problems brought on by osteoporosis can become much more serious and the risk of broken bones even greater.
Postmenopausal life involves an increased risk of heart disease and of suffering from a heart attack. While one forth of women over sixty-five have heart disease, doctors are often reluctant to start early testing in women as they do in men. Cholesterol tests should be reviewed on a regular basis. Steps should be taken to keep these numbers as well as blood pressure in control to prevent serious heart conditions or stroke.
When women experienced menopause side effects in the past, doctors would prescribe hormone replacement therapy. Due to recent studies, doctors have began to question the actual value of such therapy for women considering the risks that it brings. With hormone replacement therapy, women have a greater risk of stroke and heart disease. The risk of developing breast cancer is also greater.
