Reviewing The Tamerica Lp-120 Pouch Laminator

Coming in at around a mere 60 dollars, the Tamerica LP-120 is a surprisingly affordable

laminating machine that is designed to laminate small documents like business cards, luggage tags, name badges, and identification cards. Relatively new to the market, but already garnering a fair amount of attention, the LP120 is quite feature rich. In fact, this machine offers many things that you will generally only find in larger, more expensive laminating machines. Here, we are going to delve into and discuss some of the pros and cons of the LP-120 in order to help you decide whether the machine is right for you.

Pros:

1.) Probably the most remarkable thing about the LP 120 is its ability to handle pouches from 3mil to 10mil thick. Almost all of the other smaller pouch laminators on the market can only handle 3 to 5mil pouches, and because 3mil aren't generally available in smaller sizes, they are for all intents and purposes limited to 5mil. The LP 120, on the other hand, takes all comers and can handle documents with virtually any laminating pouch available on the market.

2.) An adjustable temperature feature is also something you don't generally find in a laminator at this price point, but the LP 120 lets you adjust temps from one hundred to one hundred sixty degrees centigrade. This is a great feature if you need to adjust the machine for different thicknesses of laminate or for thicker documents.

3.) The Tamerica LP-120 looks to be extremely well put together for its low price point. It offers a metal casing and is built like a laminating machine that should cost much much more than it does.

Cons:

1).) In our initial testing of the LP-120, we noticed a slight odor of something burning. Customer service assured me that this was normal for the first few uses of machine and that the odor would disappear eventually. While that proved to be true, it would be nice if the burning smell didn't need to appear in the first place.

2.) The throat width of 4.7 inches enables you to run pouches up to four and a half inches in width. While this will get you through most jobs, you cannot use this machine to laminate larger format documents.

3.) Though the box claims that the LP-120 can do cold laminating, we couldn't figure out how. Just turn the heat all the way down perhaps? We are not sure.

4.) We found it a little off putting that the motor ran continuously while the machine was turned on. While not a problem for infrequent users, if you use it a lot you may want to watch out for worn out gears causing the machine to fail.

5.) The warranty of a mere ninety days seems a little thin, though we guess that even if the machine only lasts a year or two, you could buy two or three more and still end up spending less than you would buying one of the comparable machines on the market.

Recommendation:

For a small office, school, or organization that generally needs to laminate small documents, the Tamerica LP-120 simply can't be beaten for the price. On the other hand, if you plan on using it more often, it might be wise to seek out a machine that has a longer warranty and that doesn't have a continuously-running motor.
