Reviewing The Lost Symbol By Dan Brown

There was so much of hype around the next offering from Dan Brown

, it wouldnt be unnatural to expect some kind of miracle to take place at the end of the book (when you turned over the last page). The plot of the book was a mega secret one and one might consider it to be a miracle that the contents didnt get leaked over the net for 40 seconds after the book was released.

Unprecedented Hype and Secrecy

Expectedly, the film rights for the book were sold for a huge sum, and Tom Hanks is likely to return with a new film based on the book again. The way the novel was released was awesome, with boxes being taped tightly and prominent seals making it difficult for people to even think of doing the unthinkable (removing the tapes and reading it). A toll free number was also distributed freely to check those employees who couldnt (in case) control their curiosity.

Dan Brown Has Done It Again

In terms of fuss and curiosity, may be publishing world couldnt have done better. People came to the stores wondering what Dan Brown was up to for the past several years. They may have found the book slightly heavy on formula or that the book was longer than thought, the author, however, had done it again (not 100%, but quite close).

The Room Is Empty and Dark

The protagonist is Robert Langdon again, who invariably gets attracted to historical conspiracies time and again. He is invited to the capital to deliver a lecture by his mentor on the topic of Masonic history. When he, however, arrives there, the room is empty and dark. The mentor does meet the protagonist (as a limb) and Robert comes to know he (Robert) has been deceived. He has to deal with the negative character named Mal akh who doesnt believe Robert is his target. Its not clear why Peter Solomon has been kept alive and why on earth is a secret branch of CIA also interested in the affair.

The Secrets Are More Informative

Although the readers (the Dan Brown ones) are used to it, the topics related to Christianity and Bible are not referred to directly. But then, Dan Brown is used to using religion into fiction, and The Lost Symbol is no different. Masons are a secret organization; and the enormous amount of information about them provided by the author in the book comes as a pleasant surprise. This doesnt mean there are no flaws in the book, and the way the ancient academic knowledge is used in the book shows a confidence from the author which is not explained fully. The Lost Symbol is still a fun read, due to extremely efficient mix of the ancient knowledge with the modern sci-fi.
