Review on Canon PowerShot SX30 IS
However the shooting is kinda tiresome experience. Photo quality is superb in vivid light. It is not a speedy camera, takes time for everything right from lens to movement to the shooting speeds.
Comprises lot of features beyond lens like one touch record button for capturing movie at 720p resolution, vari-angle LCD and variety of shooting modes.

The SX30 to some extent looks like compact type of Canon EOS Rebel dSLR. The front of the big, comfy grip consists of a shutter release which has a level for function the utmost 35xzoom lens, then a shooting mode dial and a power button. The motor pushes the lens smoothly but takes lot of time just to move in & out. At the back beside the thumbrest you'll see a Frame Assist button which helps you by drawing the lens back and moving it frontward again when released. However it is still overly slow when you try to trace a moving object. Below this button to the right side of thumbrest you see Play button for playing and AF Frame Selector button for moving the AF frame wherever you wish the camera to focus and for changing the size of the frame. Beneath this is a Control Dial resting on top of 4-way directional pad. Control Dial helps in navigation plus for changing settings. It goes very freely without any actual stops so it is quite easy to gust former whatever it is you are trying to set. The pad sets exposure compensation, focus type, self-timer and ISO as well. The center of the Dial holds a Func/Set button that chooses options and broaches shooting mode specific settings. A discrete Menu button under the Dial raises rest of the camera options and next to this button is Display button.
Display button helps in moving back & forth from 2.7in spinning LCD to EVF for framing shots. You can even switch to detailed LCD, detailed EVF, low-info LCD, low-info EVF. The problem is that some of the modes use Display button to get into secondary functions. So incase if you are currently in one of those and wish to shift from LCD/EVF then you have to put down the shooting mode you are in first. Or what you can do is spin out LCD, which turns on the LCD automatically if you are employing the EVF. Likewise, if you flip the LCD to face into the cavity results in turning on the EVF. In the end, youll find it as annoying design choice. The left side of the EVF houses a programmable shortcut button and the right side houses one-press record button to capture movies. For extra movie shooting options you have full Movie mode on shooting mode dial.
Eventually, all the controls are quite easy to use but surely need some practice if you are naive user of Canon's controls and menus. Even the experienced Canon users have to check out the full manual included on software disc packed with the camera.
This model uses Li-ion rechargeable battery that survives pretty well. Battery is placed in a slot at the bottom of the grip, where you'll find the memory card slot as well. But the slot cover doesn't have the lock. Canon has included hot shoe which is also seen in previous versions but here it is just covered up. Coming to connectivity, Mini-USB/AV and Mini-HDMI ports are provided below a door on right side.
SX30 IS has list of shooting options so that it can play as single camera for lot of people. There are aperture priority, shutter-priority, program and manual options. If you have array of values which you like to use often then you are given 2 Custom spots on mode dial.
Canon also comes with reliable Smart Auto which examines your subject and selects automatically a suitable scene setting from 28 particularly defined settings. And then there are pickable scene modes, some basics like Portrait, Landscape. You also get Canon's creative shooting modes: Fisheye Effect, Miniature Effect & Super Vivid. You get Sports mode, which is an auto mode does the constant shooting whenever you press & hold the shutter release. Canon rolls in Smart Shutter option within the Scene modes, that brings out smile-activated shutter release, Face Detection and Wink self-timers. Face Detection waits for the camera to notice new face at the front of the camera and then captures a shot. Wink is to start the shutter just by winking at the camera.
To capture the close-ups, the camera provides 0-inch Macro mode that gives sharp images.
Performance
Shooting is kinda slow. But has comparatively quick start up. Akin to other megazoom cameras, SX30 IS's photos are significantly soft. When zoomed completely they are noisy. Even though you notice yellow blotching, exposure and color stays consistently so photos can be used at smaller sizes with little/without cropping. Relatively, its photo quality is the best you gonna find. But its lens is too slow when extended fully, which says even in the brightness you need to use higher ISOs. Low Light mode is provided but it reduces the photos resolution to 2MP. With the ultra wide-angle lens gives good Center sharpness.
Exposure and color are usually superb and consistent athwart its ISO settings. Canon's i-Contrast feature helps in raising shadow detail. Video quality is similar to HD pocket video camera. Even though it cannot replace full-size camcorder, it is still good enough for casual viewing on HDTV and Web use. Optical zoom is provided when you are recording. Image stabilization is also available. Canon's Miniature Effect and Color Swap modes give you a bit more room for experimenting with videos. The device's trick is its 35xzoom lens.
If you want one single camera to please whole family of users or need just one camera to manage vast variety of situations then SX30 IS will make a better solution.
