Review: Too Tangled – The Magic Got Killed
Review: Too Tangled The Magic Got Killed
Somehow there's always a good reason for exitement whenever a Belgium indie rockband releases a new album. The chance of having a listen to some fine quality state of the art music is very high. It's because of bands like dEUS that there are quite some expectations whenever a new Belgian group comes around. Too Tangled does not let us down!
Itchy
The Magic Got Killed' is the debut album of Too Tangled. The band consists of only two people: Roeland Vandemoortele and Eva Buytaert. It could very well be, that these two people from the city of Gent, are more than just bandmates. A name like Too Tangled suggests a more romantic relationship. For now however, that's a mysterie
Whether there's something going on between these two or not, the fact remains that there's a lot of tention on The Magic Got Killed'. There are some really heavy and loud songs on this album, the greatest part however, is filled with more subtile songs. All the music on this disc has one thing in common: the songs tend to give you an itchy, uncomfortable feeling. Listening to this album is not exactly relaxing
Dark
The rock that Too Tangled produces is very much influenced with Americana. It's like the ghost of Cash is haunting inside of it. The Magic Got Killed' is sometimes atrabilious and sinister. It's a good thing that at least a few songs are a bit more heavy and uptempo; they provide some air to breath to the listeners. It might have been a good idea to reduce the number of subtile songs and increase the amount of more solid pieces.
The Magic Got Killed' feels like a dark alley, where shady people hang out together with rats. It's filled with danger and yet there's this strange attraction attached to it. There's beauty when it comes to the sleazy but virtuoso guitar work, or what to think of the simple but effective percussion? On top of it all there's Roeland and Eva vocally making love to eachother
Dangerous
Too Tangled succeeds in creating it's own world. Not a very gentle world. The magnificence does not come from overwhelming harmonies. The Magic Got Killed' is like a rusty constructions that gnashes and squeaks. This album is dangerous and yet, very attractive!
