While Mexican cinema has garnered a sizeable, critically acclaimed catalogue in recent years (Amores Perros, Pan's Labyrinth, Babel), the rest of Latin America has yet to receive the attention it deserves.
Javier Fuentes-Leon's directorial debut is certainly a step in the right direction, with a sensual, beautiful and touching tale that has already won a whole swag of awards including, notably, the 2010 Sundance Festival's Audience Award for World Cinema.
Undertow (or Contracorriente to give its native name) tells the story of a small South American fishing village, and how contemporary sexual identity is far from universal or even easily definable. Much loved fisherman and pillar of the community Miguel is happily expecting a child with his bride Mariela in their rural, religiously strong village, but unbeknown to everyone else, he's harbouring an illicit love affair with gentle outsider artist Santiago.
As Miguel battles against his feelings, Santiago tragically drowns in a swimming accident - only as Santiago hasn't been officially blessed with the funereal rituals of the town, his spirit can't move on. The only person who can touch, see or hear him is Miguel, and while they initially feel blessed to finally live out their relationship in public, Miguel soon realises that the only way to help Santiago move on is to confess his affair to his wife and his village so he can be properly buried.
The region's stripped back, peaceful and rural way of life is always at the forefront of the tale, yet with no name or even country given to the fishing village in which it occurs, Fuentes-Leon's message on Latin American masculinity is never obtrusive or PC-heavy, instead promoting a delicate love story that's relatable to all irrelevant of your sexuality.
Paramount amongst crafting that connection are the three leads, who each excel with complex, heartfelt performances, all of whom are caught within a director's lens that frames the tale against a backdrop as beautiful and romantic as its story.
