Online retailer Amazon UK moves into grocery market

Online retailer Amazon, made famous for selling books and electrical goods

, has now moved into the food and drinks market in the UK for the first time.

Customers are able to choose from a wide range of products from shampoo to chocolate biscuits while having the option to rate their purchases using the current star method used on the site.

However, the new move might not fit everyone's buying habits, as many products are only sold in bulk.

For example, standard-sized packets of Walkers crisps are only available in boxes of 48, priced at 17.50.

The online retailer is continuing to expand its product range, and said it is still "early days".

A spokeswoman told the BBC that customers would be able to benefit by buying in bulk.

Those that plan to make use of the new section of Amazon UK could benefit from the unlimited one-day delivery for an annual fee of 49. Most supermarkets tend to charge around 5 but shoppers given a choice of specific time slots.

Standard Amazon delivery charges apply if you don't purchase the annual promotion, and the site follows the same concept when purchasing from independent Marketplace suppliers which incur their own specific fees and are sent out separately from Amazon orders.

The Amazon's grocery section is currently offering more than 22,000 products - slightly more than online supermarket Ocado, which sells John Lewis and Waitrose-branded products.

Director of grocery James Leeson, said: "Amazon.co.uk's aim is to be the place where customers can find and discover any product they want to buy online."

Customers can add all purchases made through the site to their virtual shopping basket, which can then be paid for online using a range of payment methods, from debit and credit cards including the Amazon credit card to Amazon.co.uk gift vouchers.
