Actually it is impossible to answer that, because the competition does not depend on the number of the monthly searches. However, as to the articles it is realistic to use the search terms, which have around 1.500 searches per month.
It is also important to distribute the articles to the high PR directories, because the power of the directory is important to the ranking. If you feel that the LSI keywords are not so important to the ranking, maybe it is the right time to correct this opinion. My own experiences testify, that they have great importance. So why not to use them, especially when the usage is free and useful?
