Minnesota Vikings: Obviously a lot hinges on whether or not Brett Favre returns to action this season
. With Favre under center, the Vikings are a team that every football fan wants to get NFL tickets to see; without him, they're a borderline playoff team. Favre had a magnificent season in 2010 and led the Vikings to within an overtime of the Super Bowl. If he returns, the Vikings are again a contender for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. However, if Favre retires for good this time, the team's offensive identity changes dramatically.
With Tarvaris Jackson under center, the Vikings would again become a run-oriented offense that depends heavily on running back Adrian Peterson. Peterson is one of the best backs in the league and has proven to fair well even against stacked defensive fronts, but Jackson will have to make plays for the team to succeed. Jackson has a lot of talent, and with a good running game and defense behind him, as well as his fair share of offensive weapons, he could lead Minnesota back to the postseason. If Jackson is the starter in 2010, Brad Childress' job could hinge on his performance.
Green Bay Packers: The Packers will be the favorite in the division if Favre retires for good. Aaron Rodgers has elevated himself to the elite level of quarterbacks and could be in for his best season yet as a pro. The Green Bay offense is a dangerous one, as Rodgers has a host of weapons as his disposal. With wide receivers Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and James Jones lining up in three-receiver sets often, defenses are going to have a tough time defending the pass, and that's before one factors in Jermichael Finley.
Finley is an extremely talented young tight end that has Packer fans excited. Some scouts see him as the next Antonio Gates, as the two are comparable physically and athletically, but he's still learning the game. Still, Rodgers targeted Finley a ton down the stretch and in the Pack's lone playoff game last season, so it's likely that we'll see plenty of the talented youngster in 2010. With a solid running game, an improving offensive line and a budding defense, the Packers could be sneaky Super Bowl contenders this season.
Chicago Bears: Year one of the Jay Cutler era did not go as planned for the Bears, as the strong-armed quarterback forced the issue often and turned the ball over with regularity in 2009. Running back Matt Forte seemed to be a shell of his rookie self and the offense struggled as a whole. The defense suffered some major injuries and the season was lost before anybody in the Windy City knew what hit them.
However, Cutler did finish the 2009 campaign with a couple of strong performances and the team brought in offensive guru Mike Martz to help get the offense off the ground. The team made two major offseason acquisitions in defensive end Julius Peppers, who should bolster the team's pass rush in a big way, and running back Chester Taylor. There have been rumblings that Martz wants to give Taylor just as many touches as Forte this season, if not more.
Taylor is exactly the kind of versatile back that can thrive in Martz's scheme. It's hard to see this team making the playoffs in 2010, but they've got enough upside to get there.
Detroit Lions: The Lions have won just two games over the past two seasons, but they could take a major step forward in 2010. Matthew Stafford's development will figure into the team's success in a big way. The young quarterback has 10 starts under his belt, as well as a number of new targets.
The team brought in wide receiver Nate Burleson, tight end Tony Scheffler and running back Jahvid Best to make this offense more explosive and open things up for stud wideout Calvin Johnson. The Lions also rebuilt their defensive line through both free agency and the draft. The secondary is still suspect, but the Lions should show that they're on the right track this season.
