Networking 101: Business Networking Basics
If you are new to networking, do not worry
If you are new to networking, do not worry. Everyone attending a networking event had to have their first experience as well. We offer some tips to help you avoid having that nervous feeling heading into your first event.1. Take it all in. Be a sponge and soak in your surroundings and everything taking place. For the first few minutes, notice how people interact with each other. See who is in groups and who is working alone. Keep an eye on the time to see how long the conversations are lasting. When is it ok to move onto someone new? How much of the conversation is business and how much is discussing last night's Miami Heat game?
2. When in a discussion group, ask open-ended questions. Try to start interesting debates rather than one word answers. Get people to think and start debates. Offer up intelligent rebuttals and do not be afraid to debate a point. This will also show people that you are interested in them.
3. Be a powerful resource for others. By offering to help someone else, you show that you yourself already are established and have connections. Let others think you're higher up than you may be. Provide them with as many suggestions and information as you can.
4. Do not be afraid about letting people know what you are looking for. You will be surprised at how many people will offer to help you and offer guidance. Admitting you are struggling with something can ease others tension, as they are probably struggling with something as well. Take people up on their offers to help you. Be clear in what you are looking for.
5. If you are referred to someone, follow up quickly. Do not let time pass by chancing the person leaving before you go introduce yourself to them. When someone you want to chat with is free, be sure to get to them before someone else does. Chances are if you want to talk with this person, others do as well.
6. Have fun! Try to enjoy yourself and take notes on what it is you need to do differently next time. It is not the end of the world to attend a networking event and come back with nothing. Over the course of a career, it is bound to happen to the best of us. Relax and have fun! It is better than sitting in your cubical.
