NFL NFC North Division Review
The irregular season from Minnesota is the only surprise in the Division, since Green Bay is going through another winning season, Chicago hangs in second, and Detroit repeats the same mistakes from the previous season.
With an 11-5 on the regular season the Green Bay Packers clinched wild card, but saw their Super Bowl aspirations crushed by the Arizona Cardinals 45-51 in the Wild Card Round. The Packers became the second team (Chicago with 693 was first) in NFL history to surpassed 650 regular-season wins, finishing with 654. Wide receiver Donald Driver had a great season setting records in the Packers history with 647 receptions and six consecutive 1,000 yard season that entitle him as the highest in both categories. Running back Ahman Green went after Pro Football Hall Of Famer Jim Taylor's 8,207 rushing yards record, and set a new franchise record with 8,322. And for the second consecutive season and first time in NFL history the team had a 4,000 yard passer, two 1,000 yard receivers and a 1,200 yard rusher. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receivers Greg Jennings and Donald Driver, and running back Ryan Grant were responsible for this respectively.
The Packers are in their 2010 Bye Week enjoying the first place (6-3) of the NFC North, and will be back on the road to visit the Minnesota Vikings, a team against which they began their 3 win strike on Week 7. Aaron Rogers is following the last two seasons line, and has already 2,300 yards for 15 touchdowns. Greg Jennings is also doing his thing, and has already surpassed the 4 touchdowns from last season with 6, and is coming closer the 1,000 yards with 551.
The Chicago Bears finished the 2009 season 7-9, in a year that will be hardly forgotten by quarterback Jay Cutler, who signed some records in franchise history: he was the first Bear QB with 4 touchdown passes in back-to-back games, and also the first since 1970 with a 100+ passer rating. Added to that he is second in team history in passing yards with 3,666 and third in passing touchdowns with 27. For the rookies Johnny Know tied Walter Payton's record of 4 consecutives games scoring one touchdown. And for the tight ends Greg Olsen's 60 receptions and 8 touchdowns put him in second place for a TE in the Bears history.
At mid season of 2010 things are looking better if compared to last year's end of the season performance. With a 5-3 record the Bears are holding on to the second place of the Division, one victory away from the leader Tampa Bay, that has one more game. On Sunday they will receive division rival Minnesota (3-5), a chance to clinch the first place of the NFC North, as Green Bay will be on Bye Week. Inconsistency is what quarterback Jay Cutler has found in his receivers, still he has been able to throw 128 of 211 for 1,671 yards and 9 touchdowns. Hopefully for him and the franchise they will be able solve this problem in the offensive line and perform better.
The Minnesota Vikings closed the 2009 season (12-4) at the gates of the Super Bowl, falling only 4 points short from it. The NFC Championship Round was lost 28-31 to the New Orleans Saints, team that ended up winning the title. Still the Vikings clinched their back-to-back division titles for the first time since 1977-78. Some of the franchise records set during the season where: quarterback Brett Favre's 100+ passer rating in 10 games, running back Adrian Peterson's 18 touchdowns in a single season and tight end Visanthe Shiancoe's 11 touchdowns, which are the most for a TE. For the rookies wide receiver Percy Harvin's 2,081 combined yards and 60 receptions also set a team rookie record.
Having more defeats after 9 weeks than the total for 2009 is a clear sign that things are not coming out as easy as they did last year. In 2010 they had a 3-5 record that relegated them to the third position of the NFC North standings. They will be facing division rivals Chicago on Sunday, a team that occupies the second place. The Vikings haven't been able to win two games in a row so far in the season and are winless on the road. A win against the Bears would get rid of those numbers and come closer to the second place. As it is usual the top performers from the Vikings are being Brett Favre with 1,896 passer yards for 9 touchdowns, and Adrian Peterson with 857 yards for 7 touchdowns.
The Detroit Lions were swept 0-5 in the last games of the 2009 season, and finished 2-14 in the year. Despite the team's performance wide receiver Calvin Johnson set a new franchise record with his career 3,081 receiving yards and 193 receptions in his first 3 seasons with the Lions. That is the most for any Lion during the first 3 seasons. And rookie quarterback Matthew Stafford's five touchdown passes in a single-game tied Ray Buivid's 1937 record for a rookie.
Detroit began the 2010 season with the inertia from the last year's ending and lost 4 in a row. No wonder why they are last in the Division. They will need to make the best out of the last 8 games of the season, starting on Sunday at Buffalo, where they will take the winless Bills, a good occasion to recover from the over time home defeat 23-20 versus the New York Jets.
