Methods To Keep Cool And Save Money
This summer, my spouse and I had the great misfortune of living through several days with a broken air conditioner
. Because we live in a condominium complex for which a single unit cools an entire building, we did not have the option of calling a repairman. Instead, we had to wait for the head of maintenance to handle the issue.
The desert heat encouraged us to find alternative ways to cool our home and stay comfortable. Those who want to cut the fat from their electric bill often find themselves in a similar situation. But how can it be done?
Your most cost-effective defense against summer heat is adequate window coverings for every window in your home, with the exception of the iced glass windows often found beside the shower.
During the day, blinds, shutters, and curtains should be drawn. Though it can be unpleasant to go without much natural light during the day, sunlight is the major culprit behind heat penetrating to the indoors. It may be wise to layer curtains over horizontal or vertical blinds.
If you still want to allow sunlight to filter through, you could keep your blinds or shade partially open while lightweight, translucent curtains cover the window, though this may not be as effective as eliminating the sunlight altogether.
If you are willing to invest a great deal in your home, replacing outdated windows with those that effectively deflect heat during the intense summer months and help retain it in the winter--which many modern windows do--can save you hundreds in the long run and keep your home more comfortable and make it more attractive.
Blocking sunlight and replacing windows are great strategies for desert areas like the one in which I live. But humidity is the major killer in the coastal areas! Search your local classifieds for a portable air conditioning unit, as many of these filter allergens like dust and mold from the air while also sucking out excess moisture.
If your home is relatively small, you can substitute your standard air conditioner with the smaller unit. If not, the entire point of having a portable unit is being able to move it from one room to another. You can turn your entire house unit up a few degrees or turn it off altogether, depending on current conditions.
Replace light fixtures with ceiling fans in areas where air circulation can make all the difference, such as in the kitchen or at the top of stairs.
Remember that summer doesn't last forever. You might feel miserable for a few more weeks, but fall is just around the corner.
