While some items in a man's wardrobe are suitable year round
, others are not suitable for the winter months. In formal business wear, wool worsted suits are fine for year round wear, as are long sleeved dress shirts with French cuffs. With few exceptions neck ties are not seasonal. Linen ties are generally associated more with summer or tropical clothing.
In winter, it is necessary to wear an overcoat. Formal business wear calls for a wool, camel hair or cashmere overcoat that falls just below the knee. The best overcoats do not fit too tightly and are not belted since this might wrinkle the suit underneath. Leather gloves in dark colors have the right appearance with more formal attire. If boots are worn, they should be dress boots suitable for formal business wear. If the boots don't look well with a suit, they should be exchanged for shoes upon arrival at work. A wool or cashmere woven scarf is practical and has a nice appearance with an overcoat. Wool felt hats are practical and attractive. Hats should be suitably formal or should not be worn at all.
In offices where business casual means a sport coat and tie, a long overcoat is a good choice. A trench coat or all weather coat is permissible. Parkas are too casual for this environment. A wool car coat that falls to the hip or mid thigh should be acceptable. The coat should be longer than the jacket. Leather gloves and woven scarves are the proper accessories. Most boots can be worn with office casual attire, the best are dark colored boots without laces. Work boots are intended to be worn by workmen and should not be considered business casual.
In businesses where business casual does not include a sports jacket and tie, a parka should be acceptable outerwear. Pullover sweaters, turtle necks and cardigans can be worn with casual slacks and boots. Sweat shirts are never included in a description of business casual attire. They only belong in the workplace if the workplace is a gym.
For men in professions like construction and mechanical engineering, working outdoors in cold weather is a necessity. For men who spend long hours outdoors, insulated overalls in dark colors present a professional appearance and are more practical than coats or jackets since they allow greater freedom of movement.
Winter business attire is determined by practicality as well as fashion. Appropriate outwear depends on the environment of the workplace. It is important that outer wear harmonize with the rest of man's attire and that it contributes to his overall style.
