Martin Yale 700e Paper Cutter Review

A commercial-quality paper cutter, the Martin Yale 700E is meant to be used in smaller

print shops or in-house production floors for medium to large businesses. Here we take a look at the 700E's features, and give you our assessment of its strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

1.) We were impressed with the 700E's ability to easily cut three hundred seventy five pages of 20lb paper. Although you probably can't call the 700E a true ream cutter, at this capacity, we think that it would be a great choice for businesses, churches, schools, etc. Or anyone, who needs to cut large stacks of paper to produce brochures, flyers, newsletters, and the like.

2.) We thought the paper clamp was a nice for a manually operated unit, and found the paper stop was easy to use and adjust. These are great features that allow the user to ensure a true and straight cut.

3.) Safety is always an issue when you are using a paper cutter, and we liked that Martin Yale included a blade latch mechanism on the 700E that keeps the cutting blade in place until the latch is released. This feature ensures that the user will need to use both hands for to use the machine, which helps to keep fingers out of the way of the blade.

4.) The 700E's long and very sharp blade give the average person all the leverage and strength you will need to easily cut though large stacks of paper without needing to be an Olympic weightlifter.

5.) The clamp worked great, as long as we didn't over-tighten it. We found that it was pretty easy to get the hang of the correct amount of pressure to apply on the stack, and once we did the cuts were really nice.

Weaknesses:

1.) The cutting blade of the 700E is twelve inches, which will get you through the vast majority of cutting jobs. However, it cannot handle documents that are any larger than that. If you are going to need to cut bigger sizes, you will have to look for another machine.

2.) Although the blade latch helps to ensure some measure of safety, you should always keep in mind the potential dangers of this kind of equipment. It may be a good idea to put a lock on this machine when it is not in use, and to make sure that children don't go near it without an adult around. This is sound advice for any paper cutter, however and is not a specific weakness of the 700E.

3.) It should go without saying that a cutter of this type needs a very sharp blade in order to be most effective. It's always a good idea to keep an extra blade on hand. The process of changing the blade of the 700E is a bit on the laborious side, and took us a good forty five minutes to complete.

4.) While the 700E is a great machine for cutting large stacks of paper, it doesn't give the cleanest cut when you use it with just one or two sheets at a time. For this purpose, you might want to keep a smaller rotary cutter on hand.
