You Can Start For Free
In big business, doubling one's money is considered an incredible and somewhat rare feat. It really is all about profits. The reason people practice good business ethics more often than not is because, well, good business ethics tend to lead to higher profits and better business relationships, but you see, profit is the bottom line: How much you can earn versus how much you have to put in. So if you put in a thousand and made two thousand, that would be a big win. Likewise, if you put in nothing and get anything, that's also a win. There are thousands of ways to become a CEO of your own company with no money at all. Try designing a t-shirt on one of those print shop sites, and there you have it, you're now the CEO and president and chief designer of a t-shirt design firm. If you make just one sale, you're doing what all business people want to do: Make something out of nothing.
The T-shirt thing was just an idea. It's free, people always need to wear clothes, and some people make six figures a year simply designing t-shirts. You could also earn your first dollar as a business CEO by getting some free books being given away by the library and selling them to a used bookstore. It won't be much, but it's that first dollar. You could put a free ad in the paper for a handyman, car washer, lawn mower, etc. Try to make your first dollar on nothing and you'll see how little risk actually goes into starting your first business.
It's Not Just a Dream
One of the reasons you may be reluctant to start your own business right now, besides the recession, may be that it just seems like such a... A pie in the sky kind of dream. As if you may as well daydream about being an astronaut, a movie star, AND the Yankees MVP all at once. You know, it's really not as hard as you think though. It really isn't. There are a few tricks to running a successful business, but they're pretty quick and easy to pick up.
First, sell something useful. The best investments are in selling things that people NEED. Everyone needs food, everyone needs cleaning products, bath tissue, clothing and so on. If you don't sell something people absolutely need, sell something that they, at least, really really really want. For example, let's say the next time you get some vegetables, you plant a garden. People don't NEED absolutely fresh, local grown vegetables, but people who know good food really do want them. This is essentially a no-money investment, as you would have just thrown the seeds away otherwise.
Second is to price competitively, and third is to stay up to date on new marketing concepts and technology like social networking sites and so on... And honestly, that's about it. Invest low, price competitively and stay up to date, and you should do just fine.
