Learn How To Dance Salsa In Melbourne

Here's how you can get started learning how to dance salsa

, or, if you're already learning, how to improve really fast!

1. Find a suitable place to learn. The main thing is, find a salsa instructor that you can relate to, someone who you could see yourself befriending, and even more importantly, someone whos salsa dance style you like watching, and aspire to!

2. Ask for a free lesson. It's pretty standard nowadays. Or come to The SALSA Foundation in Melbourne CBD. Our Beginners Salsa classes are ALWAYS free. Come as many times as you like! (www.thesalsafoundation.com.au)

3. Forget all your insecurities. Hardly anyone gets it on the first try. It takes just a little time and patience. Remember, you need to learn how to crawl before you can walk! Also, keep in mind, theres no need to be self-conscious, other salsa dancers are too worried about what they look like to be watching you as closely as you think!

4. Listen to salsa music whenever possible. It will help you get the rhythm, the feeling. Most of the best salsa dancers love the music too, not just the dancing!

5. Watch people who know how to dance salsa. You'll pick up little tricks, and stay motivated that way. Its always interesting to watch your favorite salsa dancer, and remember - they were beginners once too!

6. Go out salsa dancing. Do it as often as you can. It's the best way to learn fast, and it will ensure that you learn your own style of salsa, not just look identical to your teacher.

7. Practice, Practice, Practice. Find a practice partner and practice as much as you can! Salsa (and dancing in general) is not a natural way of moving, its a new thing that you body has to learn. The more times you do it, the better you will become.

8. Dance with as many different salsa partners as possible. Dancing salsa with different people helps you improve your leading/following. This is THE most important aspect to social dancing. Because no two salsa dancers dance exactly the same way, its important for you to be able to adapt your leading or following to the your partners.

9. Have thick skin. Unfortunately, there are people in the Salsa scene who take pleasure in putting others down. Shockingly, many of these people are instructors at salsa schools. They seem to have no other way of validating their own skills other than to trash someone else. These people aren't worth a second thought. I highly recommend that if you attend a salsa class where the teacher is openly criticizing other people who aren't around to defend themselves leave that class and do not return. Remember that those who gossip about other people will soon gossip about you. There simply should be no room in Salsa for these kinds of people.
