Is Capitalism Immoral? Will People and Money Ever Happily Exist?

We all ask this question from time to time, some more than others

. With criminal corporate activity, the wealthy taking advantage of the poor, politicians securing their power with shady backroom deals, marketers and advertisers bombarding us with manipulative images, and the rape and destruction of our environment, the constant conquest to make a profit seems like the undoing of us all, sooner or later.

We want to feel safe in our society. We need to know that when we wake up every morning that our efforts are causing good rather than damage and unfairness. Is it right that one person can own dozens of properties and rent them all out to the less fortunate? Is it fair that a small family business goes bankrupt because a national franchise opens up across the street?

The list of injustices can go on and on.

Perhaps you have been hurt or jilted in the past.

On the other hand, some people believe that capitalism and the need for money is the ONLY fair method because it creates free enterprise, where ANYONE can become financially secure based on their own dedication and work. Capitalism frees and enables everyone to decide their own future, to have a dream or a goal and be in charge to MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Still, others say that this freedom is too dangerous because it innately promotes selfish behaviour instead of actions that lead to health and peace for the masses. Surely you have heard the term "Money is the root of all evil". Or perhaps you have heard the term "The LOVE of money is the root of all evil".

Is money the problem? Is greed is the problem? Is human nature the problem? Is money simply a tool, no better or worse than any other tool such as a hammer or a knife?

Some say, "The LACK of money is the root of all evil". This implies that a shortage of money motivates people to act greedily or immorally. We can all understand why a person would steal or commit a crime if this person's loved ones were starving and desperately in need of food. But why do people that already have enough money for 10 life times still act immorally in regards to money?

Is the problem capitalism? Or is it basic human behaviour to want to be in full control of our life? Is it a form of entrapment that fundamentally leads to confusion and aggressive acts of "justice" (in the name of prosperity)?

Heavy duty questions, yes?

In my opinion, I personally like the idea to, "Love people and use money" rather than the opposite, "Love money and use people".

This sounds great, but how realistic is it? Can we love each other enough to always do the right thing? What if a person has invested their life savings in a business venture and was suddenly faced with losing it? Would this person illegally dump some toxic waste in a lake to save his life's investment?

As humans, we are capable of so much. We have so much to gain, and so much to lose. In a "perfect" world no danger would exist because our safety would not be dependant on this stuff called money; we would all be unified and the thought of "getting ahead" or "profiting" would never be considered: We would all take care of one another 100%.

We are fundamentally good people, most of us. We feel bad for other people's suffering. We even attempt to help people that are suffering. In fact, some of the wealthiest people on the planet do ALOT of good with their money and power.

The reality is this: Capitalism, immoral or not, is not going away anytime soon. We need to look at our choices rather than our limitations. We cannot live a in system dominated by money and refuse to better understand it and work with it.

It is said that 5% of the population owns 95% of the wealth. What does this tell us? Perhaps it means that only 5% of the population take the time to learn about money and manage their money. Perhaps the education system ought to start teaching children about money starting in grade one.

How many of us follow expert financial advice and put aside 10% of every dollar we earn and make wise investments? Does anyone in a developed country really need to be broke or financially stressed?

Is Capitalism Immoral? Will Money and People Ever Happily Co-Exist?

In my opinion, capitalism is a system that is not perfect, but it CAN be used for the benefit of everyone when we learn HOW to do this in a smart, practical, AND fair way.

Will we end up like the dinosaurs? Or will we change our minds and use money as a helpful tool?

What will YOU do?
