Is Business For You?
Share: You quit your job to focus on a business you have been thinking about for the last ten years
. You realized that going into business will not only give you financial independence but more time for your family as well. Right? Wrong.
Here is the hard truth: Going into business may mean less time with the family.
Being in a business is a full time job. It is most unlike that of your days when you were still working for a company where you have to report at 8am and sign off at 5pm. After office hours, you do not think about anything anymore and just enjoy the free time with the kids and your spouse. If you think owning a business, however small this may be, will give you this luxury, better think again. Running a business is a never ending job. In fact, it is a 24/7 job that you have to attend to personally.
Ive compiled some of the things that you have to give up when you decide to run your own business. Read on and consider these things before you get your feet wet.
First, you will have to give up those weekends that you used to enjoy with the family. I love going out of town especially if it is a long weekend. The hubby and I enjoy these long drives with the kids be it to the woods for camping or some place we have never been to before. If you are going into a business, especially in the startup phase, you would have to give all this up. There will no longer be weekends or long weekends because your business has to stay in operation or at least you have to stay on top of it. You have to personally attend to problems or concerns that suddenly arise: a machine conking out, an irate customer, and undelivered orders for custom greeting cards. These are issues that are real and they will happen no matter how you prepare for them. If weekends are sacred to you, then going to business is probably not a good idea.
Second, you will have to let go of those quality time with the spouse. Call me romantic but I always find time to cuddle up to my hubby. We tell stories, tease each other, laugh at ourselves this is serious fun time. If you are ready to pass this up because of deadlines or urgent phone calls, then maybe you are cut out to do business.
Third, bonding time with the kids becomes less. After dinner, I usually gather my three kids and look at their notebooks. I try to stay on top of what they are doing in school. We usually work together on school projects like a costume, an art work, or even their greeting cards for every special occasion, or what have you. But then again, if you are working on your own business, it would probably require you to stay up late to check your inventories or do your finances. Your time with the kids, if you decide to pursue a business, will suffer.
There are more things that you have to give up for your business. Those that I listed above are what I hold dear. You simply cannot walk away one day and decide to close down the shop because you feel you have to escape. No, you simply cannot do this because you have invested so much time and money to get your business up and running.
Now, consider these thoughts and think before you leap in. Yes, it might be rewarding in the long run. Yes, it might give you the financial independence that you have been wanting all these years. Yes, it might be the best solution after slaving it out for a multinational company. But then again, are you ready for what you will give up. Just think about it.
