One of my friends in Kisumu, Kenya, has just emailed me to tell me of his physical condition. He was out working and I know his work well and have been with him in the villages where he works and serves.
Coming home earlier this week having to walk some 15 miles to the main road he was caught in one of Kenya's downpours. He trekked on to the main road wet and cold and tired. Not long after he got home he was suffering from what he describes as cold or flu symptoms, and he did mention that it might be a touch of malaria.
Kenya is a truly beautiful country but the local people have a very difficult life, particularly out in the villages and isolate rural districts.
Trudging for fresh water some four or more miles a day along tracks that impassable when it has been really wet, is no fun. Then I see the rich travelling in comfort in Nairobi and hear at first hand of the ongoing corruption at so many levels of government.
The Church of Jesus Christ has men and women serving as faithfully as they know how in various areas of serious deprivation. Having been in Mathere and Kariobangi, I am aware of the hard work in which various men and women are engaged, but the forces against them are phenomenal. These are two slum areas on the northern side of Nairobi.
Mathere is similar to Kibera on the west side of Nairobi, but not quite as large.
There is so little encouragement for those who are pouring themselves out for others day by day. These people are inspired and motivated by the power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and they are empowered by the presence of the Holy Spirit.
They can build up a work and very suddenly it can be ruined and pulled down and destroyed.
It is like a farmer who has started to grow some food for his family and neighbours, and all of a sudden there is a storm and the rain and hail destroy the growing crop. Or, there might be no rain and the crop withers within a week or so.
Many in positions of authority know all about these situations but so few are willing to do anything positive to help. This is something I find very hard to understand, but sin makes people very selfish, and I do understand!
Violence at election times is a feature which many have to experience.
Corruption at the highest levels in unbelievable.
Sin leaves so many scars and wounds and tears and sadness.
When my friend and colleague recovers from his drenching he will return to work serving those who are lost and poor and in darkness, and also encouraging those who are in Christ to help their fellows around them in society.
Might there be something you can do to help? Be involved in helping the poor. It is a most rewarding activity and the rewards have nothing to do with money.
Invest where Jesus Christ encourages us to invest!
