Innovative Business Leadership Training Builds Trust And Collaboration

Share: Whether you're parenting your children, teaching a class of troubled teens
, or stepping in as the new manager at your work, you'll find that team-building exercises are great tools for strengthening self-confidence in your kids, students, or employees as well as trust in their fellow group members. Here is an activity idea to make your next class or company retreat more exciting.
This team-building activity is called "Toxic Waste." It is intended for a small group of people--adolescents or adults--and takes about thirty to forty-five minutes. The idea is to move a bucket of "toxic waste" to a neutralization container while maintaining a safe distance from the radiation. It is a challenging exercise and should be used on a group that has already had some teamwork experience. While it can be done inside or outside, outside is more fun because water can be used.
To set up, lay a piece of rope on the ground in a circle. It should have a minimum of an eight-foot diameter. This represents the area affected by radiation. The bigger the circle, the harder the activity. The bucket of toxic waste should be in the center of the circle, filled with water if you are outside or balls if you are inside. The neutralization container should be thirty to fifty feet away. Again, the greater the distance, the more difficult it will be to complete the challenge. Place a bungee cord loop and eight cords near the circle.
Now, explain the rules. The group's mission is to use the equipment you have given them (the bungee and the cords) to transfer the contents of the bucket to the neutralization container without spilling it or stepping foot in the circle. The size of the circle (i.e. safe distance from the radiation) should be maintained while the bucket is being moved. Tell them the toxic material will explode in twenty minutes. Explain the stakes, namely exposure to radiation and world destruction. Give the group five minutes to plan before they try anything.
As the group attempts to move the bucket, assign penalties to anyone who steps inside the circle. For example, make them lose a limb by only being allowed to use on arm, etc. If someone steps fully inside the circle, he or she dies and must sit out the remainder of the exercise. If the bucket of toxic waste spills, the world is destroyed. Allow the group to discuss what went wrong and how they can improve; let them try again.
"Toxic Waste" is an excellent team-building activity for any age group. It and other team-building activities may be the very thing your group needs to build greater trust and collaboration.
