How To Use The Six Human Needs To Achieve Financial Freedom As A Coach, Trainer Or Therapist
Psychological research has consistently identified six human needs or drives within
all of us that answer the fundamental question why do human beings do the things they do? These drives propel us in the quest to experience a meaningful life and they require no conscious effort on our part to be satisfied. We can either meet these needs in positive, negative or neutral ways, but everyone finds a way of meeting them somehow.
1. Certainty we all need this in relation to the basic necessities of life such as food, shelter and personal safety. Certainty enables us to avoid pain.
2. Uncertainty we all have a need to change our state, move our body and alter our emotions so we seek variety through entertainment, mood swings, eating and so on.
The challenge with these first 2 human needs is that they are in conflict and most people meet them in a way thats obtainable, rather than sustainable.
3. Significance we all need to feel special and important in some way. Therefore we look for recognition from others or from ourselves. Used inappropriately, helplessness can become a form or power and a way of gaining significance.
4. Connection we all feel the need to be connected with someone or something. An aggressive interaction with another is an example of an inappropriate form of connection.
Again, these 2 fundamental needs are in conflict and we need them both.
The final 2 fundamental human needs are the only way to experience sustainable joy, rather than momentary pleasure.
5. Growth everything in our universe is either growing or dying and human beings do not experience spiritual satisfaction unless their various capacities are growing. In other words, progress makes people feel sustainably happy.
6. Contribution we cannot be spiritually fulfilled unless we are contributing to others wellbeing in some way.
So how can you apply these six human needs positively, sustainably and healthily to
achieve financial freedom?
1. Certainty This is probably the toughest need to meet on your route to financial freedom because any apparent lack of certainty creates fear. Review and apply the key fear principles covered in my previous articles for more information on overcoming fear.
2. Uncertainty No apparent problem here as there will inevitably be plenty of uncertainty as you take
steps to financial freedom. Learn to enjoy the journey and thrive on uncertainty in the knowledge that one of your fundamental needs is being well met!
3. Significance As a coach, therapist or trainer, you will have a specialist area of knowledge or skill and this specialism can enable the fundamental need for significance to be fully met.
4. Connection You can meet this need by connecting with clients in meaningful and powerful ways.
5. Growth Your business is an amazing personal growth vehicle, so experience it as a learning journey and very importantly invest in your growth, mentoring and development.
6. Contribution Ensure that a proportion of business profits (5-10%) are used to support your favorite worthwhile causes. Consider offering some of your time to those who are committed to achieving results but genuinely lack the means to pay for your expertise.
