How Stereo Microscopes Offer Super Dimensional Viewing

Microscopes have evolved a lot over the years

, and far from being simple units that utilize magnifying glasses in varying sizes and numbers to amplify an object to several times its actual size, they have now turned into complex machines that use digital technology and computer screens to display highly magnified images. Stereo microscopes are a variation of the humble microscope that uses almost all components in dual form to produce a 3D image of a sample.

Objects or samples that require visualization in three dimensions are usually put under such microscopes. Just as a 3D film thrills viewers by slightly displaced images so that both the eyes of the viewers combine to view that particular image in 3D, so do stereo microscopes combine dual lenses that chart out dual optical paths and provide a 3D image of the sample under observation. Such a microscope can therefore offer a viewer a chance to observe the depth of the sample along with magnification. In these types of microscopes too there are variations such as fixed, intermediate and zoom microscope systems that offer varying magnification levels to the user. The intermediate microscope system is also known as the Galilean optical system, thanks to Galileo.

While traditional microscopes with dual lenses look similar to compound microscopes advances in science and technology has seen the emergence of a digital display attached to stereo microscopes that converts the 3D image into a high resolution image that is shown over the LCD screen. Viewers will however need to wear the same type of red and cyan glasses just like people do to see 3D movies so as to see the images on the LCD screen in 3D. Since the distance between the lens and the sample is quite high, a viewer can also work while observing the sample, thus the name 'dissecting microscope' also being accorded to this microscope. The zoom range of these microscopes range from around 4x to around 100x, which offers a very high level of magnification in higher priced models.

Several versions of stereo microscopes are used in various industries including jewelry, electronics, biological, metallurgy, and many more. These microscopes can easily be used to observe solids or opaque objects while also being used to observe other tiny objects by either passing light through or over it. There are several models available that range from inexpensive ones that feature dual lens for hobbyists to complex ones that pass data to a computer through a USB port. Prices range from a couple of hundred dollars for hobby microscopes to thousands of dollars for professional versions of stereo microscopes that are made by well-known manufacturers such as Nikon, Bausch & Lomb, Olympus, etc. Children and adults alike can easily use these microscopes based on the model they choose.

For professionals and hobbyists that need to observe or to work on objects in three dimensions, stereo microscopes can be a boon since they help in observation and also allow them to work at the same time. These microscopes are precise and hardy, and can be used in a variety of applications and industries so as to improve productivity as well as educate the user in a truly three dimensional manner.
