The company dates from 2002 when it was formed by Brent Oxley with just three servers. HostGator has since become one of the top 10 players in the hosting marketplace with 8000+ servers under management. Despite the growth it is still possible to escalate support issues to Brent Oxley (although I have not tested this).
Services Available
HostGator offer the normal hosting services - shared server, virtual private server and dedicated server. The latter can be run on Linux or Windows but the two shared services are Linux only. All include access to software for building a web site and cPanel for controlling everything.
There are 3 shared hosting plans called "Hatchling", "Baby" and "Business". Most of the resources offered are "Unlimited" in all the plans - which does serve to keep things simple. The main difference between the Hatchling and Baby plans is that the Baby plan allows unlimited domains whereas the Hatchling is limited to 1. Going for the Business Plan gives you a private support telephone number (toll free) and the option to have your own IP address and SSL certificate.
You may have seen HostGator advertising hosting for $4.95 per month. This actually relates to the Hatchling Plan if you pay 36 months in advance. If you take the Hatchling plan on a monthly basis it costs $8.95. There is no contract (i.e. long term commitment) which means that you can cancel at any stage and get a proportionate refund. In addition HostGator offer a Money Back Guarantee for 45 days during which you can get a full refund. It is easy to find Coupon Codes to reduce these prices when ordering.
Technical Service
Having read much customer feedback on HostGator I think it is fair to say that the technical service provided is very good (and this has also been my own experience). There were a few moans about things that HostGator does not do but this will not bother the vast majority of new customers as they do deliver what its says on the website.
Support Service
This is area where HostGator excel. Support is available 24/7 by phone, email and chat. Most of the comments I read were highly favourable but there were a few negative ones from people who thought that they questions were not answered properly.
Other Customer Comments
I did see some negative feedback concerning payments and refunds but I would find it strange if there were no negative comments. One thing that I saw several times was that people liked the ability to pay monthly without an on-going contract and joined HostGator for that reason.
Host Gator Review Conclusion
My own experience of HostGator has been very positive and that view was supported by the customer feedback. They offer a good service at a reasonable cost.
