, making jar candles is a good start. Many successful home business owners started simple like making container-based candles. Candles on a jar or any container are fancier with different sizes, shapes and colors. The instructions in making jar candles are simple to follow.And the materials are also easy to obtain. Here are the basic materials:
1. Glass containers. Any container will do for your candles. You can use glasses, jars, buckets, cups, bowls, wine glass and more. The only thing to make sure is that your containers are fireproof so it will not break or leak when you pour in the hot wax mixture. You can do some practice and use not so pretty containers. But as you feel confident with your skills, make it certain that your glasses or jars are neat and presentable to sell.
2. Wax. There are many wax selections. There are paraffin, soy, bayberry and beeswax to choose from. Paraffin is what most people engaged in home-based business use commonly. It is cheaper as well. But there are bayberry, soy and beeswax that are used as well. Bayberry is taken from bayberry fruit, while soy is extracted from soybean, and beeswax is obtained from beehives. For this project, paraffin J-50 is used.
3. Wick. Depending on the jars you are using, an appropriate wick should be used. Zinc core wicks are recommended, although you can also use other types. Wick of 51-32-18z is recommended for this project.
4. Color. There are waxes that have a natural color in them like bayberry and beeswax. Bayberry has olive green color and beeswax has yellow color. But for home-based business, it is better to use different colors even if you are using beeswax or bayberry so your clients have wider selections. Soy wax and paraffin wax both have neutral color.
5. Scented oil. Adding scented oil into your melted wax will attract more clients. However, you have to make sure that you have the right ratio of scented oil to your wax for satisfactory results. There are many scents to choose from when you go to a candle-making store. Bayberry and beeswax have their own natural scents. Bayberry smells sweet because the wax is extracted from its berry fruits. Beeswax smells of honey because it is taken from beehives.
6. Wick bars. In order for your wick to stay upright and at the center of the container, a wick bar is necessary. But you can use a straw, stick or pencil as replacement.
7. Melting pot. This is where you will place your wax for melting.
8. Burner. Besides from using gas burner, you can also use electric stove, or stove that uses coal or firewood as the source of flame.
9. Stirring rod. A stirrer is needed in mixing the wax mixture as you add the oil and coloring agent.
So these are basically what you will need in order to make jar candles. Of course, you should also know the basic safety measures. Jar candles are a nice decoration at home or at the office. For a home-based business, it is among the niches that have wide market.
