Having An Independent Movie Budget That Works
There are times a new filmmaker never gets a movie done because they have an unrealistic
"dream budget." By a "dream budget" I mean that it is a budget based on what a movie maker wishes they had to spend, instead of what they can spend.
Most "dream budgets" from a independent movie perspective, are not based on financial reality. If you can't afford to rent a helicopter for a daring rescue scene then why have a scene like that in your film? If you can't afford to close a city street for an intense gun battle, then why have it written in your movie? Those types of scenes cost cash that most indie film budgets will not be able to raise funds for.
Securing a multimillion dollar deal with a Hollywood film studio, production company, or connected producer to financially fund a indie movie project is a bit of a long shot. Especially when it's a first time filmmaker without a proven track record asking for the money.
It's even a bigger long shot to find movie investors outside of the entertainment business to put up big money for a film that has a large budget. Trying to raise a million bucks as an indie filmmaker takes dedication, skill and a little luck.
But it can and does happen for indie filmmakers that pursue their dreams with moxie. If you are able to get a nice chunk of money to make a movie then the sky's the limit, but if it does not come together you are stuck in the mud waiting for money that may never come. That's a nasty hang for a filmmaker. You want to be able to have a realistic indie film budget that works for you.
This dramatically boosts the chances of securing funding you need to make your film now, not later on. On lower budget movies it is always better to have a budget based on indie resources, not a "dream budget" stuffed with elements that will not be realistic to include in an indie movie. The saying "champagne taste on a beer budget" fits well here.
If you are producing your own movie then you have an idea of how much money you can raise through family, friends, and your personal wealth. That's a great starting point for mapping out a sensible and workable budget.
A indie film budget that works is based on a cash you can secure to finish a movie. The tremendous benefit of having a workable budget is it spells out in hard numbers the amount of money you can spend to make your movie allowing you to schedule a successful movie shoot.
