HTC Desire Z Preview

The HTC Desire Z was launched alongside its HD sibling at the manufactures London conference in September

. They may be siblings, but they appear to be completely different, as Desire Z provides users with a full QWERTY keypad.

The keypad is unlike most others on the market, as rather than sliding-out, it is attached to a hinge, making it more sturdy and easy to use. The keys appear to be spaced apart and raised, which is sure to make messaging quick and easy. You are also provided with shortcut keys which you can customize to direct you to your favourite applications, which is unlike any other QWERTY currently available. Alongside the keypad is a 3.7 inch Super LCD display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution, so you also have the option to use the on-screen keypad too. Standard Android buttons appear underneath the large screen, alongside an optical track pad.

Despite its dual input methods, the handset is still pocket friendly, measuring 119 x 60.4 x 14.2 mm and weighing 180g

The Desire Z is equipped with a powerful 800MHz processor and comes with Android 2.2 on-board, which saves waiting for those illusive Froyo updates. An update to 3.0 (Gingerbread) is expected to be available in the near future, however. With Froyo on-board, Google apps come pre-installed, including Search, Maps and Goggles. Sense UI is also provided, which is the most easy to use and customizable Android user interface. This also includes access to the all-new HTCSense.com, which allows you to remotely control your handset from your PC or laptop.

The handset is well endowed with entertainment features, including a rear-facing 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capabilities. The camera comes complete with autofocus, face detection, geotagging and LED flash, so we can expect it to produce images of a similar quality to Apple's iPhone 4. The 3.7 inch display is perfect for viewing you images and videos, although the handset can be connected to your television for sharing media with your friends and family.

The device also comes with excellent connectivity, providing users with both 3G and WiFi connectivity. Web browsing is expected to be quick, and the handset is equipped with Android WebKit browser, which is one of the most advanced on the market. Social networking integration and e-mail support is also included, alongside the option to push updates from Facebook and Twitter straight to your homescreen.

Other features include a built-in media player, FM radio and a 3.5mm audio jack for listening to your music while on the move. The handset comes with 1.5GB of internal storage, which can be expanded up to 32GB using a memory card.
