Gomorrah - A Full Movie Review

Gomorrah is a thrilling organized crime film focusing on Italian gangs

. The story focuses on the hideous damage the Italian gangs cause. In fact the film starts off with a brutal murder in typical Italian mafia fashion.

If there is one way to describe Gomorrah, it's 'brutally honest'. There are really no punches pulled in this grizzly movie.

The movie is a loose translation of Camorra. Camorra is the city of Naples' organized crime network's name. Gomorrah is the city of sin in the Bible.

The Gomorrah movie effectively shatters the romantic, honour and family driven image of the Italian mafia as portrayed in the Godfather. Instead, this incredibly realistic film reveals the true nature of organized crime - brutal and incredibly vicious. The film is definitely not for anyone with a faint heart.

It focuses on a few kids growing up in this world of crime. There's Toto, an aspiring drug dealer. He's sharp and in today's world might have been a very successful salesperson or businessman, but in the world of Gomorrah is given no real choice except to join a gang. He is so desperate to get recruited that he'll undergo any initiation ceremony - even if it means getting shot.

Franco on the other hand works at a chemical plant. He quickly discovers that he can make a small fortune stealing and selling toxic waste chemicals.

Finally there's Marco and Ciro. The movie follows the tragic tale of these two kids who are head over heels with De Palma's 'Scarface'.

What's even more chilling about Gomorrah is the fact that it's based on a non-fiction book. Every account is based on reality. The grotesque violence portrayed in this film becomes much more difficult to watch knowing that most of the things you see in the film actually happened in real-life.

Overall for the right audience Gomorrah is truly an amazing film to watch. It is sad, grotesque and filled with horror, but it's also riddled with suspense, exciting build-up, amazing character development and more.

The film is definitely not for the easily queasy or the faint of heart. Be prepared not just for gory violence, but for heart wrenching tragedies and grossly discarded human life.

Robbery, drug dealing, counterfeiting, extortion, murder, torture. This film has it all. But unlike its mindless Hollywood counterparts, this film has a masterpiece storyline and an amazing build-up of energy and suspense. The ending is climactic in ways most films simply fail to do these days. Overall I am happy to give this film 5 stars out of 5, but I accept that not everyone's going to like it.
