The Haitian heath care system has faced numerous challenges especially basing on the beliefs and traditions of the community. It is also one of the most corrupt countries and therefore the health sector does not receive the support it ought to by the government. Women and children are mostly affected in Haiti. Nurses then should be trained to help in administration of services to the community to whom 85 % live in the rural regions and are unable to access health care.

Haiti is a country which covers 10,700 square miles. It is situated east of Dominican Republic, a fertile country covering the most fertile part of the Hispaniola Island. Haitian people then have an African descent and a small percentage has a mixture of a European and African origin, they are called Mulatto. The main language of Haiti is Creole which is spoken by the majority and a small percent speak French. Most of the citizens are Catholics while the rest are Protestants They finally got independence when the slaves revolted against the French. They then defeated the Napoleon troop and obtained independence.
Political Structure of Haiti.
Haiti is a semi-presidential republic. It is a multiparty system government and the president is elected through voting and so if the majority votes for him he becomes the president. The Prime Minister heads the government who is put in place by the president who has to be from a party with the majority in the National Assembly. The president and the Prime Minister play the grand role in the exercising of executive power. The two individuals make up the government (Eme, et al., 2009). The president still put in place ministers and secretaries of state. The Prime Minister's duty involves enforcement of laws in the country. They work together to ensure that there is defense in the nation. The government delegates powers to various departments though not necessarily with any constitutional consent. Currently, the President is, Rene Preval from Lespwa party, the prime minister is Jean-Max Bellerive from the same party. The prime minister was elected currently on the 11thof November; 2009.Its present constitution was put in place on March 29, 1987. Their constitution is modeled after United States of America and that of France. In its political structure, corruption is so rampant. It is ranked as one of the most corrupt in the region.. The report given by the International Red Cross ranked it to be 155th of 159 countries that were surveyed.
Religious/Traditions of Populations that may affect health care
Voodoo is a common practice by many people in the population of Haiti. The capital city of Haiti is Port-au-Prince. The Haitian Americans are characterized by a great connection to such beliefs in culture and traditions of their original homeland. They belief that most diseases occur are as a result of supernatural powers and that they mostly occur when the spirits are angered. The kinds of diseases attributed to spirits are those which occur and within no time they disappear. It is believed that individuals are attacked when they anger the voodoo family. To help appease the spirits a voodoo priest is normally consulted to help diagnose the illness. He then contact the spirit to find out the reason behind the illness and what should be done to make the spirit happy and bring healing to the individual. The majority of Haitian community beliefs that the Voodoo family possesses a protecting spirit (Eme, et al., 2009).This spirit is thought to help protect the members of its family from evil powers of other spirits. In this country, the health care beliefs differ from one people to another mostly basing on the origin of the group in question. Individuals who emigrated from rural areas usually entrust themselves to folk healers instead of physicians. Those who are immigrants from the cities seek help from physicians or any other professional doctors. The low class individuals normally rely on the most reliable health care as stipulated by their traditions. In the Haitian community, majority rely on home remedies which are normally offered by folk healers who give people voodoo medicine. Grand mother or a mother play major role in the diagnosing of symptoms and maintaining of family traditions in diseases treatment. A Voodooist folk healer is a priest who has knowledge in the mythology of spirits and also knows the plants to be used as remedies. While undergoing treatment, individuals normally recite prayers then followed by herbal medicine. Haitians trust in the role of good nutrition as a way of maintaining of good health. This involves eating well, exercising and maintaining of regular hours. According to their culture, fat people are seen as healthy and thin ones are considered unhealthy and that they could be suffering from psychological problems (Eme, et al., 2009).
