Global Engineering Firm Opens Southeast Asia Base

Global Engineering Firm Opens Southeast Asia Base

Leading global engineering consultant hurleypalmerflatt is targeting Southeast Asia

for the next phase of its expansion after opening a new office in the region.

The British-owned company is on target to create up to 30 new jobs for skilled engineers over the next two years as it aims to capitalise on the "huge potential" for growth by opening a new office in Singapore.

hurleypalmerflatt is recognised as one of the world leaders in mission critical engineering and new Regional Director Mark Simpson says there is huge potential in the sector due to the region"s increasing reliance on digital technology and the level of investment being made by overseas companies.

The company specialises in mission critical engineering, which by definition is any system that cannot fail, from a bank"s trading floor to a television company"s broadcast centre, an air traffic control tower or one of the vast data centres that process millions of pieces of vital information every minute.

David Young, CEO of hurleypalmerflatt said: "This is an exciting time for our business in Asia and follows a very successful year delivering projects in the region. Opening a new office is a true reflection of the commitment of our clients and our team to growing the business here."

Mr Simpson said the Southeast Asian market for specialist engineering systems is still in its infancy and is growing rapidly.

He said: "There will be huge growth in data centres as the market matures. In the region as a whole the markets are all at different stages but there is an increasing understanding of just how vital a role mission critical engineering plays in making complex projects succeed.

"We"re seeing increased activity from foreign investment trusts in the data centre market in Asia. It"s the second wave of interest in electronic engineering following the dot com boom of a decade ago. And not just in data centres "" foreign money is coming into the region in all kinds of sectors with western companies continuing to move work overseas."

Mr Simpson grew up in Singapore and joins hurleypalmerflatt with almost 20 years experience of engineering consultancy in Asia. He has led high profile engineering projects for clients including Deutsche Bank, Barclays Capital and Nomura.

He spoke of his desire to raise standards in the sector across the region and establish hurleypalmerflatt as the preeminent engineering consultancy in Asia.

He continued: "Asia is where it"s all happening right now. There is a "can do" attitude among people and a hunger for success. There are huge opportunities for young people in engineering too."

"The perception is that engineers are all about hard hats and tools, but that"s wrong. Engineers are specialists working with complex engineering systems and problems, they design mega-buildings and aircraft like the Airbus A380. The prospects for talented engineers can only increase as we move towards a digital world reliant on systems that simply cannot fail."
