Getting a DUI and the Financial Costs
Since the organization of M.A.D.D
Since the organization of M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Drivers), law enforcement agencies all around the United States and maybe even the world, have really started to crack down on drunk drivers. And most states have dropped their legal blood alcohol concentration level (BAC) to 0.08. This is a good thing in that since M.A.D.D. and the (BAC) as been dropped to 0.08, alcohol related accidents and fatalities have dropped significantly.
For those who are caught driving under the influence, the laws have also gotten a lot tougher getting your drivers license back. In many states if you are pulled over and the officer suspects that you are under the influence, he will ask you to step out of the car. You will be asked to do a series of physical and verbal tests. If you have trouble or simply can't do these tests, you will be asked to take a breathalyzer test. You can refuse all these tests, but if you do refuse them, your drivers license will automatically be suspended for a year. If you do the tests and fail them, you will lose your drivers license for at least 6 months. And either way...your more and likely going to jail.
Getting a dui can at the very least have a huge effect on your finances and could even cost you your job. You'll need to hire a lawyer, which could cost you up to $2,000. You'll also need to get your car out of impound because it will be towed. Then you'll have to pay all your traffic tickets and court fines as well as pay for any alcohol and drug programs that the court orders you to take. The entire process usually takes about 6 months to get through and will end up costing you around $3,000. And failure to do any of these things will result in a warrant being put out for your arrest and now your looking at more fines and possible jail time. And if you have a job that requires any kind of driving, you could very well lose your job.
My advice...Don't drink and drive!
