Fuel Prices - Office Of Fair Trading To Investigate
Since 2007 petrol prices have increased by a huge 38 per cent
, with diesel increasing by 43 per cent. The main thing to be investigated is the speed in which prices increase and the slowness in which they fall, if at all. They will be looking at the impact of supermarkets and the difference in prices at garages in our towns, to the inflated prices you can expect to pay on motorways. They wont however, be looking at taxation on fuel, which has been suggested is as much as 80% of the price we pay. Where this money then goes is another cause for argument as it doesnt appear to be all spent on improving the conditions of our roads.You wonder if fuel prices will ever decrease again and what the impact will be if they continue to increase at a similar rate. Surely it can only get to the point where fuel is completely unaffordable to most. The majority of the price we pay though as most of you will know is tax. But the government will never bring this down as they make far too much money from motorists to care. A few years ago in Dubai, petrol cost 5 pence per litre and in America only 25 pence per litre. Can you imagine only having to pay that?!
The fact of the matter is, with everything we buy, a bit of people power could go a long way to bringing prices down. If everyone agreed to boycott a particular garage for a week, they would have to bring their prices down to get their customers back. Garages dont make a huge amount from the fuel itself, but from people coming into their shops and purchasing other goods and food. Once they have brought their price down everyone should boycott all the other garages until they were forced to do the same! But of course the general public are not patient or disciplined enough and the ease of popping to their usual local will always win the day. So Im afraid these people continually complaining cant really moan if they are too lazy to do anything about it.
Garages are quick to do the opposite to us though. Theres a garage near where I live that I used to use on a regular basis as it was convenient for me on my way to work. Then when we had the snow of a couple of years ago that hung around for ages and for a time fuel was becoming sparse, they put their prices up by 50p per litre! Needless to say since then, through principle, I have never used them again but I doubt very much anyone else acted on the same thought as me, so Im sure they havent felt my wrath. And they will have no moral thoughts preventing them from doing the same if a similar situation was to arise. Of course in one sense you really cannot blame them as they would have been making a lot more money than normal at a time business would have slowed dramatically, but in my opinion you should never treat your customers in this way if you want to achieve lasting success. You rely on your customers and if they were gone, so would your business.
Also to be investigated are the differences in fuel prices locally. We see prices fluctuate a couple of pence here and there of course, but how can a garage in one town charge 5 pence less or more than fuel garages in an adjoining town? Im looking forward to the OFTs findings
