Share: Rugby union is the second most popular team sport in France after football and is
actually the dominant sport in most of the southern half of the country. It was first introduced in the early 1870s by British residents. Elite French clubs participate in the professional domestic club league, the Top 14. French played their first Five Nations Championship in 1910, four years after their first test match against New Zealand. The French were the whipping boys of the tournament during those early years, losing repeatedly to the home nations sides. The French were banned from the tournament in 1932 when the sport threatened to go professional in France. The French next participated in the Five Nations in 1947. It took them a further eight years to secure their first Five Nations championship, which they shared with Wales in 1955, before they came of age and won their first outright title in 1959. In the years since France claimed its first championship title, the French have become a powerful force in the tournament, winning almost half of the Six Nations rugby tournaments played since 1955. The French are also the only team in the tournaments history to have won back-to-back championships whilst fielding an unchanged team. In the Six Nations Championship France won a Grand Slam in 2002. In 2004 they won a second Six Nations Grand Slam Rugby union is a popular sport in Italy. The sport is thought to have been introduced to the country in the early 1900s, with an organisational committee being established in 1911. The Super 10 competition is the main club rugby competition in the country, although clubs also participate in Europe's Heineken Cup. Italy competes annually in the Six Nations Championship, and has competed at the Rugby World Cup. Italy is classified as a tier one nation by the International Rugby Board. Italy finally joined the Six Nations Championship in 2000. They managed to get their second Six Nations win in 2003 30-22 against Wales. Italy was the only Six Nations country not to advance to the knock-out stage. Their third win came against Scotland in 2004. Most of the Italian national team play in club competitions in England and France, which, being at a higher standard to the Italian league allows the side to make consistent progression. However, this is not always seen through results and it will undoubtedly be a long time before they win their first Six Nations Championship. More and more Italians are coming to watch rugby union games and whereas before most of the fans at the Stadio Flaminio were away fans, now Italy has a good home crowd. In the 2006 Six Nations Championship the Italian team performed strongly against every team. In the 2007 Six Nations Championship, Italy started poorly, losing to France 3-39. However, Italy's performance improved considerably, and they held reigning World champions England to a 20-7 result at Twickenham, with the Italian's Alessandro Troncon being named man of the match. The 2008 Six Nations Championship saw the Italians again finish in last place, albeit by only a three point margin. They took part in close matches against Ireland, England and France respectively and managed a sole victory, defeating Scotland 23-20 in Rome in the last round of matches. 2010 will be a very tough year for the Azzuri's with three of their 6 Nations matches being away form home - they will certainly be targeting the England game on Valentine's Day and the Scotland game on the 27/02/2010.
