Formax Fd 8300cc Cross-cut Paper Shredder Review
The Formax FD 8300CC is a personal desk side shredder that offers high-security document shredding in a convenient, compact unit
. Here is a closer look at some of the Formax FD 8300CC's strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths:
1.) These days, with identity theft, consumer fraud, and corporate espionage all on the rise, you and your business can't be too careful when it comes to the security of your documents. As a shredder that offers Level 4 Security, the FD 8300CC gives you a machine that more than complies with the recent federal regulations (FACTA) that concern the destruction of the personal and sensitive information that your business handles on a daily basis. As a powerful, high-security desk side shredder, the FD 8300CC gives such people as HR personnel, research teams, and high-level executives a handy tool to ensure that crucial and sensitive information will never fall into the wrong hands.
2.) Our testers found that the FD 8300CC was very simple machine to operate. The LED control panel keeps the user well informed of the shredder's operational mode, and there are some nice options to choose from. For easiest operation, you can simply utilize the FD 8300CC's optical sensors and set the machine for automatic start/stop ("walk away" mode), or choose the manual function if your load is too light for the sensors to pick up. If you notice the machine's capacity diminishing after a lot of use, you can choose an automatic cleaning function which sets the motor running in reverse for one minute to keep the cutting heads clear of collected paper particles.
3.) The FD 8300CC's components are of impressively high quality. The motor is a powerful, AC geared unit that easily met the stated capacity of 8 sheets per pass. The FD 8300CC also ran impressively quietly which should help keep office distractions to a minimum. The FD 8300CC's cutting heads are constructed of solid heat-treated steel. They easily handled paper clips and staples, and are under manufacturer's warranty for ten years after purchase.
4.) The FD 8300CC has some nice safety features, including automatic power shutoff whenever the door to the cabinet is open, and also whenever the waste bag is full. The machine also has its own circuit breaker to help prevent electrical problems.
5.) The FD 8300CC's waste bin is large enough at 9.5 gallons, and is constructed of all metal and (something you don't see a lot of) is guaranteed for the life of the shredder.
Weaknesses:
1.) Though not bad for a Level 4 shredder, the sheet capacity of 7-8 is on the low end of the scale these days. If you simply want FACTA compliant security and you would like a higher capacity, Formax offers a few shredders that will fit that bill.
2.) Though the FD 8300CC touts its "thermal overload protection," all this means is that the motor will shut itself off when it is in danger of overheating. This is a nice function, but it would also be a good idea to get to know the machine's limits before you attempt any sort of high-volume shredding jobs, as this is a shredder that is probably best suited for periodic use throughout the day.
