Film Review - Is Step Brothers A Decent Movie Or Not?
Step Brothers was released just over two years ago in 2008
. It was directed by Adam McKay who co-wrote the film with Will Ferrell, the star of the movie. Ferrell plays one of the brothers in the title and the other is played by John Reilly.
Will Ferrell plays the role of Brennan Huff and John Reilly plays Dale Doback. They are basically two of life's losers because they still live at home with their parents and are actually quite juvenile despite their advancing years. In short they don't really have anything going for them.
Everything changes, however, when their single parents meet up and start going out with each other. Things go really well and they end up getting married. This kickstarts the movie because it brings the two lead characters together and makes them both reluctant step brothers.
Neither of them wanted this. They instantly dislike each other and would rather they didn't have to know each other at all. However things start to evolve, as you might imagine, and they start to realize that they actually have quite a few things in common. They both like the same kinds of films and books, and they even have similar tastes in women.
The movie moves along at a steady pace and is actually quite funny in places. It is not exactly a rip-roaring comedy flick, but there are plenty of times when you will raise a smile at the very least.
Some of the comedy is pretty basic, and you can often see the jokes coming a mile off. Let's put it this way - it's not exactly sophisticated Frasier-like comedy. A lot of the humour is over the top and immature, but there are lots of people who enjoy this type of thing so I'm not knocking it at all.
The characters played by Reilly and Ferrell are actually pretty good overall, and there is good development of the characters as the movie plays out. The supporting cast are also very good and are very convincing as the family relations of these two men.
Overall the film is above-average I would say, but in no way a modern classic. It is one of those movies that some people will enjoy due to it's decent storyline and funny interaction between the characters, and others will not like at all due to it's rather basic comedy. Step Brothers is the kind of movie that you can sit back and watch without having to engage your brain too much, and there is nothing wrong with that.
